how do you split anemone???

My bubble tip anemone got in a fight with my powerhead and I was forced to do "surgery" on it. Both pieces survived now I have two. I wouldn't suggest using this technique though...

So what do you guys think??? Did all right?

We'll know more in about 6 weeks - 2 months. You can cut any anemone in half. In almost all cases they will look ok for the first week or two. You won't know for at least a month if you are successful or not.

Note I am only talking about E. quadricolor (or possibly H. magnifica). Any other clown anemone and almost total guarantee of death.

I've had a big GBTA for months that just about every week looks like it's going to split but never does. About a month ago, a local reefer gave me four tiny BTAs that were fairly bleached. You can see the big, old GBTA and three of the new little ones in this picture.

Then a couple of weeks ago, the brown little BTA split (top right in picture above). A few days later, one of the bleached ones split (top left in picture above).

I have no idea why the little ones split and the big one refuses (so does my RBTA). But I now have plenty of homes for my Spotted Cleaner/Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes yucatanicus), Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis) and Porcelain Anemone Crabs (Neopetrolisthes ohshimai and N. maculatus).

Well its been just over a month since the split of the nems and they are getting better and heathier looking everyday. How often should you split the nem? ive heard you can once a month but i dont want to rush things.

I could maybe see that frequently with a very healthy, large, individual that grows unbelievably fast, but even still that sounds borderline crazy. Give it at least a few months. Why do you want to push this so fast? Give it time to heal, grow, and just be happy.

The last thing i want to do is push things. I heard that from one person so I was just kinda curious. To me that did seem fast but wanted to hear other peoples imput on that. I probaly will every other month unless you or someone else think that is to fast. Every nem i have seems to be growing noticably within a week. Even if you could do it saftly once a month I wouldnt because im still straightening out my levels.

Splitting BTA's

Splitting BTA's

I was interested in splitting my BTA's and had success by heavy feeding by this I mean about three times a week not over feeding, and then doing a 45/50% water change both my RBTA split like clockwork I read online some dude did this three times in a row and ended up with like 20 BTA or something. I am thinking of doing this again but I'm worried 12 BTA might be over kill for my 20 long lol :bounce3: plus I would hate to see them get small again I'll let you know if I end up trying it again.

Cool, I noticed this was your first post, welcome to reef central!!!! :wavehand: I just traded 4 rbtas and so I had two and that was less than a month ago. On Christmas I got 2 Tao tronics lights fixtures which have been great and I have already notice a difference in growth but anyway the day after christmas I left for Colorado for a week and I got back today and I had four nems. The way you are splitting is a more expensive way with salt and food but only having a 20 gal I wouldn't think it would be to bad. With a 75 gal tank that would be a chore. I would think having them split naturally would help them recover faster in case you end up selling them. Mine were taking over my tank a bit and I wanted diversity in my tank so that's why I traded them.

Im not in the business of selling RBTA's but I can tell you what worked for me. Now one of the people on this forum mentioned that there are two types, one of the types that grow as large as a football or soccer ball. Which in my case I would say the size of a plate. Now when i bought my RBTA 5 years ago, it was very small the size of a ping pong ball and i began feeding it a 1/4 of a raw shrimp every week. It grew to the size of a plate within a year and a half. At that point i began feeding it half of a shrimp once a week. And after two years of feeding it, it split. After that split i didnt want to deal with the hassle of removing it out of my tank since I only have a 29g, so i stopped feeding it. Its still large but not as huge as it used to be. In your case I would suggest to feed twice a week a chopped raw shrimp and they will split in no time, I'm assuming.
