how does one mantain this amount of fishes...

A lot of filtration, Looks like so many fish that they can't be aggresive because they don't know who to go after

i doubt whether a fish can survive there for even a year with such stress due to overstocking...

I've seen very little evidence of stress due to overstocking in any tanks. Stress due to poor water conditions due to overstocking, sure.

A lot of really nice tanks in the SPS forum are ridiculously overstocked by most people's standards, but they do fine because they're well maintained.

(I can't see the youtube video, so I don't know how bad it is, but I think I had about 15 fish in my 58g at one point).

They will do just fine. The problem is being able to keep water quality up to par with that many fish in the tank.

It takes a combination of top notch equipment, and dedication to tank maintenance.

Also, judging by the kind (and expense) of most of the fish in the video...... I'm certain the owner knows what they are doing.

Tanks like this are common practice throughout Asia. They just have a different philosophy, and way of doing things.

The idea that the owner knows what they're doing because they buy expensive fish is ridiculous.

Well, then they possibly can afford to have someone who does know what they are doing take care of the tank. Either way, when someone puts down major money for fish, you better believe that most of the time they will either:

A) Know what they are doing
B) Have the money to pay someone who knows what they are doing.

I agree. Especially the fact that this system is shared on YouTube, I think this guy must have some idea what he's doing.

As for how do you maintain a tank like this, I would say hourly 20% water changes or a 100,000 gallon sump. In all seriousness though, I would assume a large water volume would be the way that good (or decent) water quality is maintained.

I am just speculating though, it is possible this guy has no idea what he's doing and is replacing dead clarions every week.

While I wouldn't stock a tank that highly, as others have said, it's pretty common in Asian countries. So, it must work somehow.....

You also don't know what's going on behind the scenes with this tank. There could be an enormous sump so that the actual water volume is large enough to support the load of all of those fish.

Not ridiculous at all. Newbies aren't plopping down $1,000+ on a single fish to put them in an environment they don't belong in.

The owner either knows what he is doing.... or the guy he pays to take care of it does. Either way..... my statement is still true.

Have seen quiet a few setups like this when I was visiting Asia for the most part they all look healthy and well taken care of

+1. Pretty typical. All the fish look healthy, and there little, to no signs of aggression. I am curious to see what happens to the pilotfish when they get 3 feet bigger, though.

There absolutely are people that do this -- maybe not as many because not too many people can afford to do it, but there are people that squander immense amounts of money in this hobby and have absolutely no clue what they are doing.

Generally, those people don't frequent this board, but it does happen.

I'd love to see accounts of tanks w/ Clarions and other rare fish, where the owner had no idea what they were doing.....and didn't have a knowledgeable serviceman taking care of the tank.

Yes it might happen every once in a while. There's obviously an exception to every rule. But that doesn't make it "ridiculous" to assume the owner knows what they are doing.

The person that bought Recty's emp when he shut his tank down went on a buying trip to California, set up a huge tank, etc. Had no idea what he was doing and killed thousands of dollars worth of fish.

IMO, this always getting overlooked when people talk about overstocking tanks that much. There is a difference between the number of fish in a tank, and what fish 'go can in that tank.'

I don't care how many, or how few fish are in a 50gal cube, no large Naso belongs in there. The Golden Pilot Jacks in the OP's video, are absolutely appalling. If there are going to overstock a tank, at the minimum, use fish appropriate for that sized tank. No monster large angel deserves to be in some dumbtards 60 cube . Regardless of how high, or low, the stocking level is, or what cultural influences there are.

From a strict "what is possible" point of view; there is really no limit to how many fish you can keep healthy in a tank; if you have the proper equipment & maintenance. 'Grow-Out' tanks used by breeders are often so crammed with fish that you can barely se the back wall of the tank. Tanks, like the one in the video, are very common in Asia. From what I've seen & read, they do amazingly well.

I've always kept a larger number of fish in my tanks and haven't had much problems from doing so. I think it helps the corals grow.

Right now, in my 60gal, I have a blue throat trigger, kole tang, pair of grade A picasso clowns, green chromie, tail spot blenny, and plan to add a couple more small to medium fish. I generally keep the tank really clean, esp for all my SPS to grow well, and run the BFS dual reactor with carbon in both.

When i used to have rare piranha's i overstocked them to keep the hostility down.
It works to a point, Too crowded and all the fish will pick on the weakest. IMO
