How hard to get clowns to host?

I have a pair of clowns and would like to get them an anemone. Is it hard to get them to host? Which anemone would be best for them?

I had two RBTA's in with my two Tomato Clowns and it took them about 3 months to figure out what they were for. My female figured it out first, and Im sure it was by mistake but she taught the male to host as well.
Also have two O clowns that took about 6 weeks to host their RBTA in my nano tank.

They will eventually figure it out.

If you get a anemone that is a natural host for your clowns then it probably won't take much time for them to associate with it but without knowing what species of clowns you have it is hard to answer. Your tank also has to be capable of housing an anemone if you wish to be successful. If you give us a full picture of your tank( size, lighting, how old it is, water parameters.....) and the species of clowns you are referring to we can help you better.

3 months for my female (percs) hosting an RBTA, and an additional month for the male. RBTA isn't their natural host but it's an easier anemone to keep.

I was searching the forums trying to find a thread that listed the types of clowns and which anemone is its natural host.

My local fish suppliers have all sorts of Clowns, such as snowflake, Picasso, black and burgandy.

We have a 29 gallon tank that is set up as an "observation" tank for any new purchases that we buy for our 90 gallon reef tank. After we are done stocking the main tank over the next year,I would like to get a unique pair of clowns and an anemone for the 29 gallon. It has a skimmer, capable filter and light system.

I am aware of all the parameters and tank requirements to keep an anemone, but I would like some help getting a good start to getting a pair that will bond to an anemone.

Last night I was at the shop and saw a trio of clowns laying all through a red BTA and they were loving life. I guess I can always buy two clowns and an anemone that way in the future...LOL.

We should have our own forum called the "how to get clowns to host" forum, this question is asked so many times. :)

Excellent link deangler!!

I guess my post should have better asked if there was a web site that showed each species of clown and what its natural host is. For example....a maroon clown prefers a RoseBTA and so forth...

I would change the name of this forum to: "How to get Anemones to host"

There will not be much information there other than put them together in a tank.

These "hosting" clowns must be really incredible. Do they just swim in place while the anemone glides on over and jumps on them?

Its a hit or miss and hope and wait it out to see. I have two maroon clowns and they hosted immediately when i put the anemone in. I first got a plain anemone and they hosted it and then i added a rbta and it wasnt even in the tank minutes when the female noticed it and wiggled her way to it and its been her host anemone ever since. I also have had a pair of regular ocellaris clowns that completely ignored the rbta in their tank and the female died and I went out and got the little male another female and she hosted it the minute I put her in with the new tank. And the little guy instantly bonded with her to.

lol you got us on that one. The clown doesnt host. Its the anemone that does the hosting.

RBCJay is that little store in Rainbow City still there. I always like taking a road trip over there to see the corals. The owner had some really nice things when I used to go there. Its been a couple of years since I lived in Alabama.

No, its not. It has been closed a couple of years now. I miss them being around, the store was about minutes from my home.

my 2 clowns hosted to my hammer about 3 weeks. I do have a nano tank so i dont know if that has anything to do with how long it took

Very hard! Clowns host what they feel like, not what they should/do in the wild and not what you want them to.
