How Hot is to Hot?

Yeah, I think he has been a bit mis lead with the whole 80 is tops bit. I run my tank between 79-81 daily. Sometimes it can get as high as ~83 and I have never experienced a problem directly related to temperature fluctuations or it being to high.

IMO 78-80 is best but if you are worried about corals dieing with the summer heat, provided there aren't other stress factors your corals will live if the heat gets up to 85. 86 is really pushing it and I don't recommend letting the tank get to 85 regularly but I have had it happen and nothing died. I keep my tank between 78-81 in the summer if I can.

I like keeping mine around 80. I have in the past run my tank up to 84 in order to increase coral growth but you need to be careful because this also increase fungal infections in fish.

Just keep in mind that the higher the temp, the higher the metabolism of the fish and coral which can mean more feeding, fish activity, and waste.

Yeah, I run mine around 79-81 in the summer, and 77-78 in the winter, everybody seems to be doing great!

same here

I have my lights on my controller to turn off if the tank for any reason hits 83. I feel safe in that they will be fine with that. I have great growth and good color on all my sps. I try to let my tank temp move a full 2 deg each day as I feel if they are used to that movement if it ever goes 4-5 deg they have a better chance of taking the change. I had the temp only move .3 deg in my tank in the past and now i have decided aginst that thory.

I run mine about 78.5-80F. Actually would prefer to keep it zeroed in on 80 year round. However, because my remote sump is in the basement which is 65F yr round, my heaters still kick on in the summer to keep it at 78.5. Its painful to watch 800W in heaters fire up with the AC running on the house.

Some of the most beautiful tanks I have ever seen shoot for around 80 degrees. There is a theory that the increased temp speeds up the growth process as well. I'm not sure about that but when the human body is sick, our temperature rises to speed up our body processes to help rid us of infection. Only makes since that if you run a higher, but safe, temperature then growth should be enhanced. FWIW I run my 360 gallon SPS tank at 80-82 and have terrific growth.

I encourage my tank to swing from about 79-83 from night to day. The old 76 degrees is ideal and never let a tank get above 80 is a bunch of complete nonsense. As is the whole "stability is the most important part", which is still see people repeat frequently on these forums. Someone brought up cillers, and they're a waste of money unless there's a chance you could be seeing high 80's for extended periods of time.

77-80 winter, 81-84 summer

Colors are always better during the summer. Still remember when I thought the world would end above 80.

I disagree completely with 80 tops. Mine runs 81 to 83 all year long and my corals do great and my growth is nuts. The tops for me is 86 which in the past has hit. I added another fan and haven't had an issue at all.
