How loud is a pistol's snap?

If you were sleeping 5 ft. from your tank, would it wake you up in the middle of the night?

It could. Depends on how heavily you sleep.

I heard someone say that they could hear it upstairs when their tank was downstairs. Are they all equally loud or is it luck of the draw?

Yeah mines loud. Sounds as loud as switching a stiff/new light or plug socket switch...

Or maybe clicking your fingers.

Mine sounds a bit like someone cracking their knuckles - medium-loud, definitely not enough to wake me (tank is in the bedroom).

how often does your pistols do their snap? nightly? weekly?

Mine is very loud and has woke me up at night when its snaps multiple times, they snap every time a fish is near them or their territory.

so if the goby and the shrimp are the only things in my tank, he won't snap?

Possibly, sometimes mine will snap at the gobie to get out of the way. But it also moves all over the tank and if a fish or shrimp comes to check him out it will snap at them the gobie stays close to the same area all the time.

my tank is literally 6 inches from my bed, and my pistol never wakes me up. its pop isnt that loud at all

id be more worried about the pair messin up your sand and shootin it all over. i had a closed brain and they moved in under it and basically killed half of it by getting sand all over it

While snorkeling in Puerto Rico I had one snapping at me. It was in a curleycue anemone and it was about 2-3 feet away and it sounded like a gun shot, even under water.

Our tank is in the room next to the bedroom. Many times the pistol's pop has woken me up.

As for messing up the sand, ours digs under the rocks and has made burrows from one end of the tank to the other. Beware of this when thinking about adding a pistol to an already established tank, especially if you put your rocks on top of the sand and not on the glass bottom!!

mine is downstairs and sometimes i can hear it upstairs, only with the doors open.

I think it would be loud enough if you are close to the tank, especially if a hermit crawls into his home !!!! crack! crack! crack! crack! crack!

I barely ever hear mine. I think it would depend on what kind it is too. I only have a randall's pistol (really small), but then again, he's got his goby watching his back.

haha those are all great stories, which kind of pistol should i get? i got my yellow watchman today! he's still acclimated so he hasn't been in his new home.
