My new tank is 60x36x20 mostly SPS

how many MP40s would i need?and whats the best placement?

2 at most and you would have to play around with the placement depending on your rock structure.

In that case you may be able to get away with one. If I were you I would get one and see how it does. If a second is needed you can always add it on.

The mp40 last time I checked can be turned up to the max and produce 3000 gph of flow. I think your best bet would be to use 2 and you can tune them down a bit if you need to. With two you'll also be able to create quite a random flow pattern.

I've always seen them placed on the sides, one a little higher than the other. Placing a vortech on the back would cause a pretty intense jet stream shooting into the front glass i'd assume.

I would use at least 2. Your tank will be big enough to benefit from that type/amount of flow. Especially when your SPS start to grow out. FWIW, I use 2 on a standard AGA 125G RR tank and I am ready to add 2 more.

Get 2. I have 2 on mine and its great, I even have them dialed down a bit.

Not necessarily. I would put them on the back wall and dial them down to ~50-60% flow. I've had these 2 running for a long time (was a BETA tester) and never had an issue with my sand.

I have 4 in my elos 160 all running at full speed I also have 3 tunze 6045 and my sand does not move my rock work is very open

Depends on what you want to keep and how you do your rock. I didn't think one mp40w was enough for my 58g. To me they're really only effective for mad sps in 2'x2' areas on 100%. Thats just me though and I went BB and wanted sps top to bottom. I had a birdsnest on the rock above the monti cap on the left that I had to move to the right side of the tank because it wasn't getting enough flow. The rock structure comes close to the front of the tank right where the purple tang is and it was blocking flow to the left side. Just depends on your own setup. Nobody will tell you what you need better than your corals. I later added another to the left side of this but I kept it tuned back just enough to get a nice downdraft from the vortech going. On one of the 48x24x24 120g's i had I would absolutely run 2-3 for full sps.

if your gonna dial the down might as well just save the money abd get mp20's, i wouldnt get a mp40 and dial it down 50%, if thats the case get mp20's

Except the mp20 can't sync with other pumps, while the mp40 can be setup as master and slaves.

how many gal. is ur tank looking for the same for a new 75? i was thinking 2 40's? is that to much?
