How much PAR for a Magnifica/Ritteri

fullmonti

now is the time
I am gathering the equipment to set up a clown Magnifica tank. Have been reading about & wanting to do this for several years now & finally going for it. I know about the aquascape so they can't feel the glass & need strong light & flow. Tank needs to be stable, well established & to QT & treat with cipro. I can't find what target PAR range to aim for. Would be good to know this to be sure I get the light needed. What I'm looking at should give 175 to 200 PAR. Is that enough?

Thanks
Jim

Honestly Jim, I don't think 175-200 is going to cut it long term without extensive feeding, but since I have only kept the one I have currently, maybe others will correct me. From what I have seen however (in both mine and others' aquariums), they tend to prefer very high light levels.

I would agree that, after owning and successfully keeping several mags, that is not enough light at all. My current setup is an 8 bulb T5/led hybrid fixture and he is thriving. I do not know off the top of my head what par levels this fixture produces, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to do a google search on an ATI 8 bulb powermodule hybrid par levels to find out. Good Luck as this is by far my favorite creature under the sea!

Thanks for this info. I can easily look at getting more light But hope some one can tell me how much more I should aim for.

It's been a while since I checked (have to borrow a meter) but if memory serves, PAR at the spot where my mag sits (up high on a pedestal rock) was 550-600.

Not sure about the actual PAR value, but I think a Kessil A360NE straight above it should be enough. I have that setting with my first purple gigantea and it seems to like it: it has doubled in diameter in just 4 months and its tentacles are fully elongated. My peak settings are 75% color and 100% intensity with a bell curve like ramp-up and ramp-down.

How high do you have the Kessil mounted above the tank and how deep was your S. gigantea?

Thanks!

About 8 to 10 inch above the water surface and the gig is 6 to 8 inch below - it gets blasted.
Keep in mind that gigs live in much shallower waters and therefore demand more light than magnificas

Not sure about that, I have seen several photos of mags exposed at low tides. I would say both gigs and mags need similar intensive lighting.

I don't know what my par reading would be,but 250 watt mh are 8"" above the water and my mag is about 7"" or 8"" below the surface. It has been in the same spot for three years now.

I have the AI Hydra 26. It's mounted 12" above the waterline and I would say my mag is about another 5-6" below the water. I only have it running at about 50% of it full intensity and the anemone is very happy. Couldn't say the Par since I don't have a meter.

That is true. However H. magnifica are also found in much greater depths then S. gigantea. So it could be possible to have a mag specimen which would do ok without the highest Lux/lumen PAR levels. My guess is magnifica available to us are likely collected in shallow waters, it's easier, I'd go with the higher light levels.

If you let the magnifica walk around they usually end up right below (or as close as hey can get) the light as high as they can get. Ive a yellow & green tip at the top of both overflows for over a year now under led's and feed a sall bit once a week. Im guessing the avg par they get at midday is near 800 (radion pro gen2's) and easily doubled size.

Tank You every one. Looks like even more light than most SPS tanks have is best.

I had not looked into the Kessil lights before but think that is what I will go with.

Thanks again!
Jim
