How much temperature fluctuation is too much?

Like the tittle says, within how many degrees should the water temp stay at?
My tank fluctuates from 77 to 82 degrees daily.

That shouldn't be bad. I wouldnt worry. As long as it doesn't go outside the recommended temperature range wich is usually 76-84 degrees. But either way you should try to figure out how to keep it a little more stable since you are having a 5 degree increase, something like a small clip on fan.

There's no exact answer to your question since it will depend somewhat on the particular organism. However, swings of 5+ degrees over the course of a day, or even very quickly, are quite common on a typical coral reef. Temperature wise, most of our inhabitants are far more resistent than they ever get credit for.

I'm going to start playing around with temp fluctuations, mand see just how far we can push things. My lttle shrimp goby tank took a 20 degree swing in a matter of hours, both seemed unphased. In short, don't worry unless your swings, unless they start getting start getting near 90 or below 75 and farv more extreme.

i agree, healthy corals can really take some abuse. just try to keep them in the normal range as much as possible. actually a temp swing is good because if your corals get used to really constant temps, once there will be a swing due to some malfunction, your corals will really freak out.

I do not think there is a lot of good evidence on temperature effects on all organisms in reef tanks. Many ocean reef organisms do well with temp changes of a few degrees each day. That does not mean that all do, nor does it mean that they "need it", but it does suggest, and reefers experiences also support the idea that changes of a few degrees are not a big deal.

That said, my tank changes little, maybe 0.2 deg F most days, maybe 0.5 deg F some times of the year. I keep it a bit cooler in summer and warmer in winter to offset possible problems with a power outage.

I keep mine pretty steady at 80 with variations of less than 2 degree F ocurring from time to time . A bit more would probably not be harmful for most organisms.
