used a pressure washer to remove excessive bryopis algae
In a final desparate act of madenss - I took all my rocks out and pressure washed them (lightly)- to remove the last vestigaes of bryopis alage. I could not get it off with the usual scrubbing with a toothbrush and turkey basters methods..etc etc. So I got a wild hair and maxed out my frustrations and pressure washed the rocks (outside the tank-of course)! It worked..yeah..the fish were freaked for a couple hours..but within a week of so the rock growth and color popped back..and within a month the coraline was growing faster than ever. It was drastic but I was learning and make some classic overfeeding mistakes...which caused all the algae growth. That was 6 months ago..and everything is now doing well. Lets also not forget what happens on natural reefs - things called storms! Humans only make it to the reefs to observe during nice sweet calm days. Hurricanes and storms tend to wreek havoc on a reef..and completely dissasemble them and wash huges waves & froth and current over them. Storms like this happen several times a year in the Florida Keys, we just arent at the reef to witness it, but if you got back a few days later you will see what a storm can do to a reef. Then it quietly rebuild and regrows!
PS - dont use your leftover live bait shrimp to feed the fish - even though the fish love to play hide and seek with them. The fish will find them and eat them all in a day or two and the resulting huge increase in fish poop will make the nutrient levels go nuts, or ithe same results will occur if the shrimp hide and die in the corner. (and then algae grows wild) Dont ask me how I know. <g>
