How QT Liverock Grazers?

Whys

There are a few critters, such as the linkia star, that to my knowledge, simply can't be feed except to provide a sufficient amount of healthy liverock for it to graze upon. I wish to run a QT, but only on an 'as needed' basis, and the recommendation is a bare-bottom. So the question in my mind is...

How do I QT a liverock grazer without starving it to death?

That's where the QT practice comes into issues.

Most inverts I won't QT. Which is where most grazers fall into. But as you said grazers need LR and you just can't accommodate them in QT. There are a few fish that are exceptions to the QT rule too. I wish i could answer better, but there you go.

You could safely QT inverts for a few day or even a week or so without having to fear starvation. The idea would be to hold them just long enough for observation and acclimation.

The question though is what medication might you use from time to time. I would hesitate putting inverts into a QT that had been treated with copper at a previous time.

But what observations would be accomplished in this timeframe?

Most people QT fish and corals to watch for certain pests or to treat for common pathogens. (i.e. hold a new fish long enough to treat it for ich) We can't really do either with something like a starfish (they don't carry most of the common parasites that would infect the rest of the tank, and the vast majority of common medications would kill it), so IMHO beyond a careful but quick examination and standard acclimation procedures, there's no reason to hold them separate from the display tank or QT them at all.

But how do you make sure that you do not introduce ick into the DT if the water the inverts were in have the parasite in it?

To be specific, I was thinking of eventually adding a dragon face pipe fish. From what I've read, they can be difficult feeders, often only grazing from liverock.

So is buying a dragon face pipe fish simply a roll of the dice?
