How to dose kalk?

If you used the calculator to match the two part you were using, that will just be a rough starting point.

Demand may be higher with limewater due to the higher pH, so you may need to up it over time to match the alkalinity demand. :)

Sweet i will test every 3rd day and see how things look. This is really just a try thing may go back to 2 part. I am not sure why but i have always wanted to give kalkwasser a try and see if tank is any different

I doubt it will eaither, however i have been doing a lot of reading about coraline algae growth and some people "claim" that they switched to limewater and from 2 part and coraline exploded. Some people claimed it the other way too. I have tried everything else and nothing has worked so i thouht i would give it a try plus its easier than to part i think and it will free up 2 dosing pumps i have. So i can set up auto mag and vinegar

I use 2 tsp/ gallon. My alk consumption seems to be more than my cal- I have mostly little corals with the intent of letting them grow. So, every couple of days I top off with just rodi and a little baking soda to get back to normal. Seems to be working, my tank is certainly more stable than it's ever been.

K thats what i thought! My shippment from BRS will be here Wed so i will be setting it up over the weekend. I am just really nervous about thing getting to high in tank

This is my post from another current thread thread on the same subject:

There several ways to dose :

Neilsen tye reactors are sealed from the air ,so undissoved kalk can be kept in them and frequent stirring will not draw in CO2 from the agitated surface at the air water interface. Drawing in CO2 leads to precipitation and loss of kalk strength Some use them successfully ;some complain about the constancy of the saturation level and/or dosing cloudy water. They take little space and are nice if you like the technology stuff.

ATO dosing can work if the kalkwater is not agitated immediately before dosing. Overdosing, cloudy water and a a lack of constancy in saturation are reported with some frequency.

I prefer a still reservoir with a peristaltic pump, a diaphram pump is ok too. I use it for top off by setting the amount of water to be dosed each day. The timer breaks the dose into 150 increments over 24 hours. The amount is adjusted seasonally to match evaporation. If it's off a bit low ,a little ro/di water is added directly to the sump to make up any shortfall. The water is stirred once when kalk is added once a week or so and left to settle for 2 hours before starting the pump which draws clear kalk water through a tube placed in the reservoir( in my case a 32 gallon brute garbage can) about 2 inches up from the bottom to avoiddrwing in the slurry settlled at the bottom.. The can is covered but not sealed. The still kalkwater will hold it's strength for weeks unstirred in an unsealed covered container.

Some use a still reservoir with a gravity drip adjusted to insure agaisnst dosing too much at one time. Generally , 5 or more hours of dosing time for top off is minimal to avoid spiking ph and causing precipitation.

Some dose by pouring it in . Again attention to avoid dosing too much at once is required.

if i am adding 50ml for 1-2min for 8 hours how high would my ph go up? I just realized i have no ph test kit.

Adding 1.25 % of the volume of the tank in saturated limewater will boost pH instantly by about 0.6-0.7 pH units (which is too much). Half that will cause half the boost, etc.

its a 55g and I will be adding about 50ml an hour maybe 100ml need to see what I can do with timer when it gets here. Do you think that will be a big deal or should I wait till I have a digital ph meter?

How does this work as an ato? If i have a certain amount that has to be added wouldnt i be overdosing if i set this up as my ato?

You can leave the ATO as is until the sediment level is too high to allow enough water or Kalk into the container. :)

according to the link(calculator) I should be dosing 24.7oz of limewater everyday how can I make that 1 gallon a day for top off?
