how to get help faster

Just a suggestion: everyone go to My RC, edit your Profiles and fill them out all the way. Put in your size and age of tank, list of equipment, experience, livestock, intended focus of tank, and anything else pertinent to your situation, down where it asks. That means when you ask for help everyone knows exactly what they're dealing with all the time. If I'm answering a question and I flip up to your last post and see "nano, 2 fish one coral, 1 month" I answer one way; if "400 gal mh, calc reactor, sps" it's a whole different ballgame.

Also, if you can possibly post your most recent test results when you're asking about a situation rather than a cascading emergency, that speeds things up, too, because if your info isn't ready, the person trying to help may have to go off on other business without telling you what he would have said if he'd had that info to work with.

The more info the better to a point.
The Internet is full of predators. Too much info regarding age, location, business, etc. can be a very dangerous thing. I know that's not what Sk8r was getting at, but we have many young reefers here, and I thought it should be said.
As far as things like tank specs, inhabitants, and test results....

FRAGLS (forum readers against grocery list signatures) I mean is it necessary to post the full tank inventory to every post in the signature? :( sure makes for a lot of scrolling when a guy posts a 1 line response to a thread....
I know you can turn off sigs but some of the sigs have good links and you lose that as well..

Adding all this data when pertinent seems to make more sense and would certainly lighten the load on the servers..

I could save far more by taking out my two sig lines. ;) But seriously, it doesn't take up much room, it only stretches out the page on your home computer, and info from both directions serves one other useful function: you can tell that the person giving you advice is a) a novice or b) has been at it a while but specializes in fish or c) is a longtime reefer with experience in your area. That's sometimes important information from the other direction.

Well guess I am just going to agree to disagree. As most of the posts I see are pretty straight forward (most actually do post the relevant information). I just grow tired of scrolling through endless pages of tank inhabitants that are completely irrelevant to the post in the first place. RC has been a nice break from that very thing where other forums are flooded with pages upon pages of everything in the tank every time a guy posts a howdy..

I just like seeing the sigs when the guy has a dedicated site and his link is there. I do understand your point but just feel like posting on demand is better than posting all the time on that stuff.
:)

I can certainly see your point, and you make it well. I like seeing who I'm dealing with, but that's me. Like your avatar, btw.

bump! why, if we need help do we have to? it can get frustrating, and i understand the server situation and the reason. if you have people trying to help you sometimes it takes two people three times as long to answer experienced questions. do you just find another route such as PM's or do you want to share info. so others can use it without asking the same "?" without posting before any answers are given.

Just to clarify, Reef Central turned off HTML in sigs and specifically does not allow URLs in signatures.

Hi Dgen, Seemed I had seen guys talk about their own sites in their sigs but I could be mistaken, I have had sigs turned off for some time just because the grocery list tank inventory was just annoying at times. I did have to use dial up at times and it was terrible.
RC users however are among the least likely to have these lists compared to other sites and I have always liked that about RC. I just hate to see it change :(.
