Hi, I just got a pair of clowns from a local seller, he got them 1.5 years ago from someone local who TR them. They are in a 28 gallon bow alone , are doing well, eat like pigs, I give them formula 1 pellets and cyclopseze FD. I saw the smaller one shake a little, is there steps to help them breed ?
As everyone else mentioned, it will just take time. You can't really force them to start breeding, but you can help push them along by providing excellent water quality so as not to cause any stress and plenty of food. Of course be careful with how much food because that can soil the water quality.
What do you plan on doing with the eggs? If your thinking about breeding this is an entirely different question... Unfortunately its not as simple as just hatching a few extra clowns in the tank. Breeding any fish takes a completely separate setup and gobs of money in additional food and then you have to have space to house possibly hundreds of clownfish for a long time before they are ready to be sold. Then the tricky part is selling them when clowns are already so widely available.
Now, if you just want them to breed cuz its cool, more power to you!
Low stress and lots of high quality food is what you want to provide. I feed my ocellaris pair my own mix of seafood (clam, shrimp, scallop, tuna, rotifers, and whatever else I can find) and formula 1 and 2 pellets. Try to feed them twice a day if possible, but make sure not to foul the water with too much food.
Agree with all the above posters. One thing I do a little different is feed live blackworms, mosquito larvae & wax worms. I find that feeding a live item every couple days seems to keep my clowns in 'breeding mode'. I know Paul (PaulB) swears by feeding live foods for breeding. Other than the wax worms, I haven't had to buy blackworms but twice (1 crash) in nearly a year and grow the mosquito larvae on my deck in a 5gal bucket. Cheap (or free), easy foods that break up the typical frozen/pellet/freeze-dried food items.
