How to mimic lunar cycles?

Now I know running moonlights is a fairly popular thing, but I haven't read much about how to mimic lunar cycles.
How exactly is this done? Is it just a matter of varying the intensity of the moonlights according to the phases of the moon (thereby utilizing a dimmer)? Could I get a similar effect by using multiple moonlights (such as LEDs), and varying the number that remain lit? Are LEDs even dimable? Is mimicing the wavelength of natural moonlight a factor in purchasing them?

don't variations in the lunar cycle encourage spawning events? not that I'd actually "encourage" corals or clams to spawn in my reef, I think it would be a cool thing to have happen in my FOWLR. Really, I just wanted to know what people were doing with their moonlight setups.

Thanks for the tip on thelebos.com, btw!

yeah its seems like a suite setup... I'm looking to get a Current USA Orbit PC system and apparently the moonlights are compatible with the lunar tracker (plus it's way cheaper than getting a ACII or AC Jr)
