Humane way to have a fish expire

Thank you. I will have to pick some up. Not having this available on hand and to watch a fish slowly deteriorate is heartbreaking. This is one mediation that should be in every one's cabinet.

I agree, freezing or just watching a fish slowly suffer until it finally perishes is tough to watch. We all should have empathy for something under our care like pets and fish and if you don't then your in the wrong hobby. I got the Tricaine-S from pentairaes.com

Smashing a fish maybe is distasteful, but it is humane. As I said early quick and painless. How many hobbyist have clove oil at the ready? Let alone tricaine?
It may be quick but that ain't at all humane. Lol

Anyway I've stuck em in the freezer. Slows metabolism.

To what is regarded as "humane" I would refer to the AVMA Guidelines I linked above.

Any form of handling a fish in preparation of smashing or freezing already causes a lot of stress, anxiety and suffering to the fish.
Smashing may not be effective the first time and then cause even more suffering.
Freezing is a rather slow and possibly painful death, especially for larger fish.

The best way is the use of an narcotic, either as means of killing the fish by overdose or in preparation of another killing method. Even if it is slower, it is not painful.

I keep a bottle of cheap vodka in the freezer for this purpose. Vodka has a much lower freezing point than water so the temp gets below freezing. I've only had to use it once. It euthanizes the fish near instantly. Pour the Vodka into a container and drop the fish in.
