I may have lost everything. Ive been running an airstone but the major problem is heat. I tried raising the temps with hot water in ziplock bages but unfortunatly i work in a supermarket that never lost power and have been practicly living there. My tomato clown is still alive but my tank looks like the black lagoon. I'm mostly lps. All of the coral has shrivled up and i can hardly see any flesh anymore. I'm well into my 5th day here with no hope in sight. It's not the money and the loss of livestock that bothers me as much as the time and effort that i put into the tank. It's absolutly devastating. But on the bright side my family is safe and my house is ok. My wife volunteers at a animal rescue down and Freeport and agreed to take in 7 kittens till after the storm. She contacted one of the people yesterday and found out that the shelter was badly damaged by the storm and we may be hosting the kittens for some time. I have not seen alot of our regulars posting since the storm like Mike in Wantagh, Charlie in Lindenhurst etc. and fear that their loses are far greater than just their tanks. I have a generator and am willing to help out fellow reefers. As long as your not too far way. PM me and ill get back to you as soon as I can.
 
I have a generator and also gass if any ones needs help, also if any one is going to re start the tank when this is all over I have live rock to see the new tank that I am looking to empty out of the sump and also I will be more then willing to offer free sps frags for those who lost out, and make rodi water and salt.

just let me know. I know it my be wayyyyy to soon to think about this but there is always a a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
 
Hope everyone suffered minimal losses. I lost a frag of strawberry shortcake that I was most upset about. Overall only 3 frags due to the cold temperature drop when I had my generator off to save gas.
 
I can offer SPS frags as well. I'm just crazy busy at work but once things settle down LMK who needs. TucanSam I have a SBSC frag for you. I would offer my generator but it's still on loan. I live on South Shore in Suffolk and can also offer any help anyone needs. I expect to be off tuesday. Good luck all.
 
i live on the bay in lindenhurst. all 3 reef tanks and 1 freshwater planted are now gone. 15 years of love wiped out. generator didn't help in the end. bay water in some tanks as well. house is not to well either! will rebuild the house, but i,m thinking the hobby is done.......

Sorry to hear about that bobt2. I finally got my power last night in Lindenhurat. Duke62 let me borrow his generator the whole time. If it wasn't for duke62 I would of lost everything. A big thanks to a great guy duke62. Charlietuna and ecdragons also offered help, so I would like to thank them too.

Let me know when you are back in the hobby because we all know that one day the itch will be there again. If my tank is back to the way it use to be ill give you a couple of frags.
 
yeah Sandy was horrible! After 6 days of no power, we finally got it back late last night!
I had no generator but i did set up a big gel battery and a converter that worked really well. I used it to run my main return pump(velocity T4) and turned it on every few hours and ran it for a few minutes. It worked great and lasted throughout the blackout. but heat was the main issue! the temp on the tank dropped down to 64 but thank G-d everything made it so far. one more night without power and i dont think anything would have survived! definitely will be looking into getting a generator.

thanks for the offer, i was the frag guy and guppy guy for a local pet shop. i may redo the planted tank, we,ll see.i,m approaching 65 and the real drive is gone.
 
Lights are back but everything is lost including fish. dead snails, fish etc. probably have ammonia levels through the roof. Do you think my nice purple rock will survive?
 
Hi all. Just got back online now although I still don't have any power.

I think I managed to save my tanks by careful use of a very small (1000W) generator for the first 4 days and a much larger (7500W) generator that I can leave on most of the day (as long as I can find gas) for the last couple of days.

If anyone needs a, sort of, warm place to stay (or park a tank) you are more than welcome to come to me in Syosset.

I would take out the rock and boil it or bleach and then just re start over the tank. With that much loss and then the temp dropping I would not risk it.
 
I live in Bayville and I heated water on my grill every day for 10 hrs per day/ every day from last monday at 1 pm to this past sat. Couldn't work cause there was no power anyway. I mixed the water with a wooden spoon. between waiting for water to heat up. I ended up with the tiniest generator(350w) but it worked my actinics put them on for an hour a day. every morning the tank was down to 65 but I would spend all day to get it as high as 76. Next day same thing . I was able to keep almost everything except some really nice frags I got from anthony27. Powers on now, not bleaching that I can see and fish are normal. I will be doing a series of water changes this week. I feel lucky. I am sorry for all that was lost by other hobby members.I would have been devastated. I have had my tragedies. But if you love this hobby you must pick up the pieces and move foward and excite yourself with the possibilties like when you first started. It's not far away.

glennemo. I respectfully disagree with Anthony. In this case you know why everything died. But I guarantee there is a lot of life still kicking in the rock. A couple big water changes and run a lot of carbon, your tank will be ready to go.
