Huskerreef's Lagoon RIP, on to the next build

If you looked at my lagoon thread you will find that the pond liner has developed a leak and therefore the lagoon has met his ultimate demise. My wife was against repairing it and basically told me she wanted a regular tank in the basement with less risk for disaster. At least she is supportive. That being said I placed an order for a 96"x54"x28"tall acrylics with 4-1.5" external overflows today. I am not sure how to get it into the basement with out some demo to a wall or two but didn't want to sacrifice size. I am not sure the how supportive the wife will be when she sees the sledge hammer and saw-all come out.......:eek2: I will post pics of the build as it comes along, tank should be here towards the end of the month. Wish me luck

Ill wish you luck... don't think you will need it but it's there:D

Look forward to seeing the new set up! Will there be any new equipment or will you just be changing it over?

I am excited as tonite I just found a way to get it to the basement by only cutting one hole in the wall between the basement steps and the garage.

Any idea what caused the leak, I'm just getting ready to start the build on mine, did you use the 45 mil firestone?

I am not sure of what caused it yet, hopefully when I tear it down I will find the cause. It is a 45 mil rubber. If I can nail down the reason I will most definetly post it so it could be avioded by others.

I thought that I did everything right, I used a thick rubber liner, put 3/4" insulation between the liner and the plywood. I wonder if a tube worm of sorts could have grown on the under side of a rock and over time slowly grew into the liner until it finally cut through? I hope that during tear down I find the culpret, so future liner users may avoid this pain in the a@!

Sorry to hear. I loved your lagoon. Will the new tank be a top down view? Will it drop into the Lagoon's rock fixture?

FIBERGLASS!! you have the support structure already there, just replace the pond linner with a few layers of fiberglass.

It will be way cheaper then an acrylic tank, and its just like being in grade school art class doing paper machea(sp?) again :)

Yeah, pond liners are for the birds and koi. I built a 4' x 4' pond to house my corals when my 150 burst a seam. After 2 months it started to leak and I was forced to bring the 360 online 2 weeks earlier then planned.

45mil firestone liner and I never found the cause or the hole.

I also agree with the fiberglass but you cant go wrong with a convention box made out of glass or acrylic =].

After about 10 hours, the lagoon has been drained, LR, sand and corals have been moved to holding tanks. The liner is now cut out. Up next the modification begins to make the lagoon into a stand and mini fish room. I only hope that the fish and corals will survive in the temporary housing with all the stress they get from being caught and moved. Many more hours of work to come. I will post some pics of the tear down and the GIANT bristle worm we found.

WOW that is sweet to see that you are getting a new tank. Where are you getting it from? Did you have a GC custom tank? Sorry to hear about the lagoon!

I am getting the new acrylic from Midwest Custom Acrylics. I am excited, especially the external overflows. I had a glasscages up stairs at one point but the bottom cracked and leaked out all over my wood floors and carpet. It was at that time I vowed to be acrylic only. So that makes 2 for 2 on wet floors in my house....the wife surprisingly is behind me on the new monster and has allowed me to cut a door in her craft room to access the new equipment room behind the new tank. That made the layout so much better. Pics will be coming soon.

that sucks that you have had 2 floods! Is midwest custom acrylics in omaha? The only reason I ask is that I want to get a 96x30x30 made someday. Thanks! Cant wait to see pics!

wow, i just got back into town and heard about this. I can't imagine what the last week or so have been like with the leak and then moving everything out of the lagoon. Glad to see you've got a plan already worked out, and the new tank sounds extremely cool.

Midwest Custom Acrylics is in Minnesota, and I cannot say enough good things about them. Chris has done my 240 and my sump and both turned out great and pricing was good as well.
