Hybrid clown experiment

elegance coral

They call me EC
I want to set up a system and try to create pairs with different species of clowns. Any suggestions/opinions would be great.

In your opinion......
what is the smallest tank size for a mating pair of clowns?
Which species do you think will actually cross breed?
Which combinations would produce the coolest offspring?
Where to buy very young and healthy clown fish?

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

personally, I am against hybridization unless it is a natural occurence. different species should not be cross-bred, they are different species! that is JMO though.

if you were going to hybidize, I have heard of marron/ percula or maroon/ ocellaris hybrids. if you are trying to get a pair them clowns with similar shape, color and markings are you best bet.

10g tank will work

percula and maroons are kinda cool, personally i dont really dig the hybrids because i dont want to ever see clownfish that look as sad as some of the hybrid FW fish i have seen.

how would you like it if i made you mate with a monkey?

once you go monkey you never go back.

go for it, we already play god enough as it is, cross breeding animals that are captive bred for our amusement anyway doesnt sound wrong to me.

if you could mix a pink skunk and a perc i would fly to florida and shake your hand.

I'm going to do it. I have a 40 long that I will divide into 4 sections. This will give me room for 4 pairs to start with. The first pair I'll be looking for is a pink skunk and percula. (start saving your frequent flyer miles, Dorm_Reefer21):D

I'm not going to be forcing these fish to do anything. I'll be placing them into tanks together while they are still young. They will be fed and cared for very well. I don't understand how this can be "wrong". It sure beats the home that awaits many of the clown fish in this hobby. How can something be wrong without a victim, or at least a potential victim? No one will be harmed in these experiments. I am a white man from the US. Would it be wrong for me to date a lady from Japan?

If the species are related close enough to produce offspring, I believe they will, if given a chance. If their relationship is not close enough (like me and a monkey) there will be no offspring.

I still need to come up with 3 more pair combinations to fill the system. Any ideas?

I was actually going to leave this one alone until you made this comment.
Last time I checked Caucasians and Asians are the same species (**** Sapiens) whereas a Skunk Clown and a Percula are not the same.
It would be more like you being put in a locked room with a Neanderthal for your entire life just to see what your offspring would produce or even if you would choose to mate at all. You would not be "forced" to do anything but who knows, she might start looking good after a while.

I think it would be cooler to start seeing people doing say, ORA Piccaso vs Rods Onxy four times over maybe you can come out with a couple of expetional fish and get a pairing or 3 and start your own LE Clowns...

or you could just make the first Marine Killer Bee

Amphiprion melanopus vs Premnas biaculeatus

Maybe you will get the meanest yellow and black clown ever.

Personally I'm against the whole hybridizing. I also don't care for the snowflake or picasso either.

ditto, I don't think they look good at all.

The biggest problem you will probably have is getting them to spawn at all. I personally don't think it hurts to try, it's not like any babies will be released into the wild.

Ditto x 2.

Mixing clowns is retarded as it is. Some wont even get along. Why put them through that.

Snowflakes are some of the uglies clowns around. Naked clowns are just as ugly..

You are gonna be wasting years waiting for the clowns to sexually mature.. and odds are, they wont pair up..

Not to mention how many you may wind up with that no one wants. Will you keep them for the rest of their natural life or dispose of them?

personally, I think that if you dont sell any and you are taking good care of them then it would be fine, HOWEVER, I would give them at least a 30g tank to themselves so that they can get away from one another. if they piar up move them to a 10g, if not, they will have at least enough space to get away from one another.

Can you build me a blk/white-GBM?
haha. I personally don't see much harm in trying. I agree with Moonstream. giv em a decent size tank, and a nice nem. So what if they don't get along. Think of all the people YOU have to deal with everyday that you can't stand lol.

And yes, them snowflakes and picassos is ugly!

believe me, there will be plenty of people that will bye them. its all about marketing and sales pitch, not to mention how many people are out there after novelty and not looks. he could sell those skunk x perc mixes for a nice hunk of change.

People are already selectively breeding misbarred clowns to get those picasso abominations some people are so fond of, I really don't see interbreeding two species of clowns as being so different.
