hydnophora for gardening use :)

I killed ALL that Coral!
I have a few monti's running wild. I need to prune them back and they have run on to rocks that I can't move.

I can chip/scrape them off the rocks. They will slime their little hearts out while I do that.

I read about placing a piece of Hydnophora on top of them and having a coral death match.

So I'm curious which will least impact the tank, chemical warfare wise. This would be something I would take on systematically over a few weeks. Total water volume is near 275.

Thoughts?

In my experience it will be more of a slaughter than warfare, I would be surprized if you don't see a white mass of weblike strings extend from the hydnophora and digest the flesh off the monti. In theory the hydnophora should make short work of the monti and leave only a skeleton on the areas it could reach.

Jeff, boiling RO/DI water works really well. A 60ml syringe with some airline tubing attached to it, might work for you. I used that method to take out a sunset monti that was taking over.

On second thought, the coral war idea is much cooler though. :blown:

You will then have hydnophora to eradicate. Just break off as much as you can, turn off the flow pump and cover the rest in kalk paste.

I agree. I would certainly rather deal with a Montipora, than a Hydnophora. They are super aggressive, in my experience. If you have to prune back the Montipora on the rock, kalk paste is not a bad way to go.
