I can't believe my son just....

Ouch. If it's deep enough to catch your fingernail, I don't know if I'd trust it even if it could be buffed out.

And I feel your pain. Way back in the day -late 80's? - I had one of the first acrylic tanks available in Columbus. It had been up and running for all of a week when a "friend" brought over his 3ish y.o. son. They hadn't been there 5 minutes when the darling little angel grabbed a Christmas bell and ran over to the tank and started scraping it back and forth across the front. I was not happy. The "friend" decided something had come up and they had to leave. Haven't seen him since.

The scratched buffed out fairly well, but the novelty of acrylic had worn off. That tank became a sump for the next 10 years or so.

Yeah if you can feel it with your fingernail its probably not worth the effort - even with a good buff it wont ever look the same. Sorry man.

Sounds like tank purchase needs to take priority over his purchases for a season.

While glass scratches can be professionally buffed out the end result will look worse than the scratch as there will be a major distortion. The good news? You get your upgrade!

I just got back from lfs, they don't have any 120g. They have a 150g for $600. Not bad, but a 6' tank would require another blackbox and another 100lbs of rocks.....Ughhh.

you could order a 120 from SCA. they are starphire glass for a little more money. but high quality tank. Or there are plenty of retailers that will ship you an aquarium.

Carefully fill the scratch with clear finger nail polish, will make it a little harder to see.

Sorry to read about your situation. If it happened to me I'd probably be in jail now for child abuse. :strooper:

I recently had a 180g tank spring a big leak (30gph) and I replaced it with a 125g CADlight tank, stand, sump, skimmer and return pump. It looks very much like a Red Sea Reefer but it costs about 30% less. I've had mine for about 6-7 months now and I love it! Check out my build thread, the link is in my signature below.

I'd just live with it until your kids get old enough to know that it's verboten to mess with the tank. My little brats were always trying to throw stuff into the tank. Was suffering from reef fatigue at the time so my solution was to get rid of the entire tank for a while.

Perhaps, but it's now funny to see that at 13 and 15 they are both really into the tanks and fiercely protective of them. We had a scout event at my house last Summer that involved each bringing their own hammer and saw. One kid has some behavioral issues and brought his hammer inside - only to be quickly 'disarmed' by my then 14 year old. Papa proud

My problem is that they are always trying to talk me into getting another tank - something I'm inherently susceptible to being talked into unfortunately.

Kids. Someone in my family was so happy with a new saw of his own that he tried it out on the only wooden thing he could see---in his room. The bottom dresser drawer. On the front side.

The need to test a new possession seems to override the comprehension that the other component of the test is a bad, bad choice. Seriously, about the time the youngster learns the word 'mine!' (cf the seagulls) it's time for parental 'mine!' clearly defined. 'Mine' in our house governed power tools, the gun, and the stove controls.

I'd congratulate my son & take him for ice cream. Let the wife know it's time for a new & better bigger tank. Happy Easter
