The dive boat we chartered encouraged it's divers to catch lions if seen on the reefs. Well, I saw two and at the end of the dive came up and asked the captain for his nets... 3 minutes later, I came back with this guy!

Unfortunately I missed the second lion, he swam into a deep crevice, but we GPS'd it. They tend to stay in the same areas so we'll be back for it.

good work. did you eat it? They have been reported to have been seen around the inlet south of my house and if I see one I look forward to putting it on my plate.

Had nothing to kill it with unfortunately.. didn't want to throw my camera at it and risk breaking it.. lol. The diver charter took it to some lab in the keys where they study these guys.

Lol throw the camera :)

These little buggers are really doing a number on the reefs around here.

There are 4 off the beach in a manmade reef I dive sometimes. I think I'll go out next weekend and try to catch them too. I have seen lions on my last 8 dives. 4 in one spot on some of them. They breed like crazy... last summer I only saw one the whole time.

These guys are a real problem in the Caribbean, they were reported from almost all islands already. Unfortunately I don't think catching/killing them will make a dent to the population (because they also inhabit deeper areas), but it makes us feel good I guess...

we are going to Curacao in October and I have read many reports of them as a serious out of control problem. Hopefully something can be done.

EAT the lionfish. They are wonderfully tastey. Their meat is white and juicy, kinda inbetween redfish and grouper in texture. Goes well w/ a lot of different food items. I had a wonderful lionfish in a mango chutney a few months back.
Right now many places are "kill on sight" w/ these fish- so we might as well eat them

I have caught 2 lion fish in palm beach county both are in tanks. No reason to kill them unless you want to eat them, these are too small to even get a taste. But dont kill them for no reason find someone who would want to care for it or a LFS to take it. They are great fish to keep in aquariums but not to have in florida waters.
