I feel like quitting

I've been in the process of shutting down my tank after 5 years. Part of the reason behind it is because I'm sick of algae as well. I've been fighting about 6 different types including the normal green, bubble, the other type of bubble, bryopsis, red, and a stiff, wiry red type. I have ran caborn, phosban reactor with carbon and Rowaphos. But it always seems to come back.

I sold my 3 fish so I don't have to feed the tank anymore. I've sold off about 80% of my coral, with a few nice pieces left. Now the tank's all cleaned up with some room for the corals I have to grow. Now I kind of don't want to shut it down anymore.

But we'll see what happens. This is somewhat of an experiment to see if I can keep the algae at bay without having to put food in the tank. I do use RO/DI and my TDS is always 0. I know the problem was probably from over feeding. The days and amount of food going in really add up if you don't have adequate removal when the stuff starts breaking down.

If you guys want a good phosphate test kit, check out the Deltec kits. They're like $80 but refillable. I think it's an excellent low range test kit and really all that is adequate for a reef.

You need a larger skimmer that is properly tuned. Unless you're buying a top end skimmer, assume it is over rated by 100%. The Octopus is not a bad smimmer, your's is just not large enough. GFO would also help a lot. Big water changes performed very often will reduce nutrients (30% per week). You can also try to harvest some of the algae to remove the nutrients it has consumed.

I just read the first post, but to me it sounds like you have a Gorilla Crab or something. Are all the snail shells piled up somewhere? I had the same problem and caught a huge crab eating them.

If you play resident evil you realize there is always an easier way. you can empty all the rounds of every gun you have into the cave trolls head or you can just run through his legs and find the rocket launcher. It was said once before here, but just bump your mag up to 1500. EASY

i had the same issue in one of my tanks awhile back i use two things
special blend and nite out II both made by microbe lift the work together
lights out 3 days haven't had a problem since
