just made my first big fish purchase, she loves it. i didn't go with a drawf lion because my girl didn't like them so i got her a peacock lion fish. very beautiful fish but was wondering how often i should feed him.

i think he's just a little too stress to eat just yet so two failed attemps to feed him frozen. i'll post pictures up later

When I was into FO tanks a little more. I used to have (2) Volitan Lionfish. These fish always seemed to be the hardest to get to eat when in a new tank. I had to start with shrimp and cut up squid on a 1/8" diameter clear plastic rod. It worked in my particular case. When they started to eat w/out the rod I had to turn off the flow in the tank because they did not seem to want to chase the food. I feed those fish every couple days and they were huge. They did not seem interested to eat more often than that.

The best way to get them to eat is to hatch or buy some good sized live brine shrimp....the predator in them will make them attack them.....just a thought....i had a huge one years ago and when he got finicky, that worked like a charm...

getting them to eat frozen may never happen. It was a long hard battle for me to get mine back in the day to take anything besides ghost shrimp and feed gold fish/rosie reds

Hey, those fish really LOVE it when you pet them. You can reach in and just stroke their fins
Just kidding... DON'T do it unless someone is there to drive you to the hospital and you like pain.

I saw Hector get a dwarf lion to eat the first time when I was in his store one day. It was really quiet in the store so he said he was going to try something and I should watch. He took a piece of fishing line about 18" long and speared a large mysis shrimp with the end so the line was just barely sticking through the shrimp. Then he turned off the flow and gently made the shrimp "swim" near the fish's head. The way the string flexed and the shrimp bounced it looked very alive and the fish opened up and sucked it in!
The force of the bite was enough to pull the shrimp off the line and he pulled it out of the water for round two.

I thought it was pretty ingenious and worked great. You can "target feed" with "live food" sort of :)

Hope that helps,

I had a volitan years ago. I was not at all prepared, either was the lfs. They had me feeding it goldfish. Wow was it cool, but in the long run it aided in his death. I guess goldfish are deficient of some essential vitamins needed by the lionfish. I would stay with saltwater foods. Clams, scallops, shrimp, fish from your local fish monger. Try the fishing thing, so fun!

I just let him starve for a couple days and he took the frozen krill off the tongs. Im not sure about a peacock lion, Im sure they're harder to keep/feed. Is it like the fu mancho lion?

I started mine on goldfish, after a week or so I held the goldfish by the tale over the tank, as the lion came up for the goldfish I dropped the frozen krill into his mouth. I only fed him frozen and when I sold him 2 years later, he was 10” long with great color.

the peacock is the same as the Volitan Lionfish, thanks for all the help guys/gals. i'm sure he'll be fine after he starts eating.
