Apparently the cheaper ones could compromise image quality, thus degrading the effective quality of your lens. I don't know.... Perhaps.
 
Congrats on your new camera!!!! thats always an awesome feeling when you get a new camera ,now just get out there and take pictures.

Thanks for the advice VoidRaven. If I stick with the lens then I will get those items you mentioned. I'm pretty happy with the lens I have to say. I may stick with it and buy the Nikorr lens VillageIdiot was talking about.
When I wen to buy the lens I was going to buy the kit D50 lens but the store had it for over $300!!!!!

D50 Kit Lens - this lens is worth it for $119.00, it is a much better piece of glass than its word-of-mouth reputation... unfortunately, it is also back ordered... :)

lately, I've been using nikkor's 28-105mm. It's macro feature is actually pretty nice and the lens itself, w/ the 1.5 crop factor hitting the "sweet" spot is excellent on a digital body... :)

17photo is a nice place, i got my 50mm and d50 from them as well as my wife's P&S. They are legit (actually have retail space in NYC, not a warehouse outfit) and answer the phone when you call. good guys. BH photo is great too, I've ordered several things from them, but be sure you get the USA version of the lens if you order a Nikon.
 
Glad to see you got the camera ed... I started to wonder if you were going ot end up going through with it or not. I suspect you now owe your dad a few bucks!

Nice shots. I'd recommend you get Nikon Capture NX if you don't have or can't afford PS. I really like the program for Nikon users and make sure you download the latest version once you install the software (1.1).

both the sites i've listed sell it for around $140.00. It is a fairly powerful RAW image editor.

Nikon picture project is pretty much useless... :)
 
Will I be booted if I suggest alternate ways of getting a copy of PS? Say, paying less, much, much less..
 
Yeah this is not the place to talk about alternative means of obtaining software. edwing you do qualify for student or educational discounts.
