I have 7 tangs in my 470g DT, can I add these other ones?

I second the Marine Betta - though in such a large tank I would add at least 4, a male and 3 females or a group of juveniles. They are some of the most impressive fish around simply due to their unique behavior, very calm, hardy and get quite old.

And they are safe to anything except shrimp (their preferred food).

Yes, too many tangs. A 10' tank would be wonderful for a nice collection of wrasses or other peaceful fish.

+1 my tank is 7x6x2ft and even though I only have 13 fish currently my 3" Gem tang is aggressive towards the 3.5" dussumeri in the tank. There is a black that's 2" that is left alone. I'm done getting tangs.

Thank you all.

is it must to add the dwarf flame angel last of all fish?
is there any problem with having several fairy wrasses of different kinds in same tank?

I have cleaner shrimps so I guess that leaves the Marine Betta out of the list??

You can add the Flame Angel whenever you'd like. In a tank that large you won't have any issues with it. They are mild mannered. Maybe not so much in a small tank, but yours you will never have any trouble.

cleaner shrimps are ok. I have cleaners and blood shrimp in my 100gal with marine betta. Very peaceful. The sexy shrimps got eaten slowly. anemone would not protect them.

dwarf flame can be added anytime. specially in that tank size.

fairy wrasse are generally ok with each other. Male chase and flash the female, which looks amazing! but adds some stress to the female. Different fairies of similar color can pick on each other or flash each other. red flash red, purple flash purple, gold flash gold, etc..

for those who have anthias, do you have to feed them several times a day for long term success??

I only dose mety foods once a day and provide some nori in a clid some other times, I like anthias but if they need to be feed several times a day, it may be a problem for me

thanks

The planktivore Anthias you usually think of need at least 3 to 4 feedings a day, better more.
These guys just don't have a large enough stomach to eat enough during one feeding.

There are other Anthias species that are more like groupers and who can eat a lot at once. Odontanthias borbonius would be one (but they may eat small shrimp as well once grown to full size).

My experience with marine bettas (and I had quite a few of them) is that they are at some point likely to eat even cleaner shrimp - especially if you let them go hungry for a few days. The shrimp that may be safe are those large or scary enough like Stenopus hispidus, but even with those I wouldn't give you a guarantee.

My regal angels are not really zoa killers: one is nibbling on the large green paley's tentacles but leaves the smaller ones alone. Another is in a tank with several zoa colonies and doesn't even look at them.
In general I feel they usually only nibble on zoas as a form of self medication if they feel sick but not necessarily take them for food.

I don't see what the problem with a flame angel would be. I had a pair once and they were no trouble at all. Though I would always advise against keeping single dwarf angels - those have too much time on their hands. They either become jerks or mentally disturbed. These are fish that need social interaction with members of their own species to behave normal.

In the end, flasher or fairy wrasses may be your safest bet.

I'd get really upset if I saw any fish nibble on my hallucinations palys or pink zipper zoas that have grown from a single polyp or two into a mini colony...I like them too much.

I like my regals more - if nibbling on zoas makes them happy an healthy then I happily buy them a few colonies. The colonies I want to keep get placed where the regals can't reach them.

Roewer,

if I understood correctly, you recomend having 2 dwarf angels??
they do not fight each other? I have read they are hermaphrodit. do that means that even if I get two males, one will become a female or they have to be small enought and introduced together so that sex can be determined in the pair like clownfish??
can I mix any other dwarf angel or just two dwarf flames?

I have a Coral Beauty, dwarf flame, lemon peel and flame back in 100gal. They have no issues for the past year

In my case, I think it may not be a good idea to have to many because they can nip sps. I would rather try only 1 or 2 of these dwarf angels.

Right now I don't have flame angels, but I had a pair in the past. Right now the only angels I have are regal angels.
As for the sex change - yes, as far as we know they charge sex from female to male.
Though I always tried to sexed them to make pairs and put intentionally just females together.

How do you do that?
I was thinking of ordering from liveaquaria but you can not choose the sex of the purchase.
If I buy them "small" would that warranty that both are females?

here is the link of liveaquaria:

Thanks Roewer

I usually picked my pairs at a wholesale (De Jong) when they had enough selection. Back then I did it primarily by body shape (females are more roundish in the side profile of the body while males are more stretched into an oval) and coloration (the stripes are wider with males than with females from the same collection area).
Though there is also a difference in fin shape: males have pointy ends on their soft dorsal and anal fins, the female fins are rounded.
Starting with a group of differently sized females should also work, but you may have some chasing in the beginning until the largest makes the transformation to male.
I personally would always prefer to pick myself at a store. LiveAquaria may work as well but you may actually have more luck with a smaller online vendor that is more willing to to cater to special requests.

Thanks Roewer,
I will see if I have luck finding the pair.
If I do find the pair, should I quarantine them together?
I ask because I have 20g Tanks for TTM. I do not know if tank is to small for both?

With dwarf angels you can try to quarantine together if you got a male and a female. a 20 gallon tank should be enough. Though I would always keep a tank divider (eggcrate) on hand just in case.

Normally, if you get a male and a female, the female will display submissiveness and that should inhibit the male's aggression.
