I have redbugs

Thanks Jason.

So its officially a hermit crab graveyard. I didn't think it was working (but wasn't paying too much attention cause the Lakers game was on). After it was over I went to the tank and all my hermit crabs are lying on the sand with their legs in the air. I never knew I had so many. My cleaner shrimp has also disappeared, so we will have to see how that goes. But if its anything like the hermits it doesn't look good.

Sad to hear about your losses so far, Matt, but I hate my hermits, so I wouldn't be so upset to lose those snail killers. I hope the treatment goes well -- are you going to keep everything if it works? I think losing some shrimp and crabs is a worthwhile (although unfortunate) tradeoff for restoring the health of your corals, though. Good luck!

Yea, one of the reasons I wanted to get rid of my stuff was because I didn't want to deal with the red bugs and treating the tank and all that. But nobody was interested so now I don't have a choice other than to treat the tank. I also just sunk another $50 or so into getting my calcium reactor working again (the pump broke, some line got clogged and such). Which was another thing I didn't want to deal with, not to mention the big water change I am going to do on the tank, so I don't think it is going anywhere as of this moment.

My shrimp has survived the night, although I can't say the same for the hermits, they all look dead. But thats cool, I would rather have my SPS over the hermits any day of the week.

Sarah- Put some shells in the tank for the hermits to move into, they might be killing the snails for new houses. Also, small red leg hermits tend to stay too small to use snail shells, just something I noticed.

They have all the empty shells they could ever dream of, of all sorts of sizes. It doesn't make a difference, they still seem to enjoy the thrill of the kill to "earn" their own houses.

Hey Matt,
Did you just treat with one pill? do you have any extra, I would buy 1 or 2 at the next swap. My neighbor is a Vet but haven't been able to pin her down to ask for some. Do you have a source?

Thanks in advance

I treated my tank with about 2/3 a tab, it seems to have done the trick, but I won't know for a while. I got my Interceptor from Scott, but he only has a single tab left, which I expect he will keep for any future outbreaks that might occur. My dog has to go to the vet to get some shots, so I might ask the vet to write a script for me so that I can have some just in case this thing comes back. There are about 6 or 8 tabs per box, so I should be able to spread some around.

No problem, I am going to make it a point to pin down my neighbor (vet) to get a script. If I do I will have some incase you or anyone else needs it locally.

Yea, a box usually does a few tanks, so the stuff seems to come in waves. Today all the red bugs look like they're gone, so thats a good sign. The coral look fine and I didn't do a water change because the coral seem to be completely unaffected by the interceptor. The coral that had the red bugs on them don't seem any better, but I think it may take a little time before they look like they used too.

Hey lazy azz! Do a flippin water change already! Besides, you should be do for a bi-annual water change anyways :)

You cant just get a script for Interceptor. The vet clinic dispenses there own meds, so they write the script and dispense the med right there. It is not cheap either, 6 tabs for $60, so you should buy as youi need, not stock up. Also, only a few clinics carry this stuff.

I heard that Rob has some single tabs for sale, and this would be a viable source.

There is also a vet in town that specializes in treatment of fish. This is the guy I went to for Interceptor. Most vets are reluctant to prescribe without examining the infected animal, but I took this guy a picture and the book that describes treatment and he is on-board with prescribing the drug for use in the aquarium.

Matt, the name and number of the Vet is in the $800 :) book I loaned you. Can you post it here for all to have as a resource if they ever need a Vet to treat their reef?

I wont post names here because it could be a problem for the Vet, useing a controlled substance out of prescribed standards. But most Vets I've talked to have said no problem, you have to have a working relantionship with the Vet and explain what it does and how. I've been lucky/careful so far and not needed it, but my dog uses it so I have some and all the Vets I've talked too have said any time, no problem.

Lol, this is even funnier now thats its like 2 days old and I was over at your place before I even saw it, lol.

The vets info: Valley Animal, Dr. Vagnetti, 748-0331- I really hope I don't spill anything on that book or I am going to cry:rollface:.

i will offer a bit of advice.do three treatments on the tank at one week intervals if you want to be done with them for sure.i did a frag tank i have with one treatment and they were back in a month with no new corals added.i did the recommended three treatments on my display and it got rid of them completely.no ill effects only positive results on the three systems i have done.also i think i got them from a LA coral also, its the only place i have bought from in a long time.also i would do the waterchange and the bag of carbon.dustin dorton from ora is the guy who came up with the cure and he has a great deal of knowledge and experience. good luck.you will be pleased in a month when everything looks good again.

Yea, I am going to do the water change and the carbon when I do the additional dosing. I have found some hermits that are alive so I am doubting as to whether or not the treatment was completely effective. But I am not sure as to how tough the bugs are compared to the hermits. All I know is that I would like to me done with this so I can focus on growing some coral.

it is depressing to deal with but there is light at the end of the tunnel.everyone that has done the treatment like dustin describes in detail had success.not one of the thirty or so tanks i have read about that did the three treatments had bugs afterwards.i have had coral banded shrimp and some pods survive the treatment but no hermits that i have seen survive the three treatments.the corals look better and 100 percent healthy after about a week after the last treatment and the water changes that you end up doing seem to benifit the tank also.strangely the polyp extension of the acros during the treatment is better than usual which i dont quite understand.it may be the fact that the bugs are not pestering the corals or just a positive responce to what ever is in the interceptor besides the medicine.anyway ,i hope it goes well for you.

The polyps on the most heavily infested stag are starting to recover, so thats cool. I am going to do some additional treatments, so we will see what happens. I am going to schedule a water change (mostly so Scott doesn't harass me anymore, lol), so hopefully I can get some good stuff in and some bad stuff out.

Okay, so what I want to know is why don't people take their shrimp/crabs out of the tank before treating? It seems kinda cruel to just kill them if there is no particular reason to do so....

can you come over and catch mine.LOL.they are next to impossible to catch in a mature reef with big sps colonies and overgrown corals.heck i dont even see most of them til lights out usually.

SEVIN DUST KILLS CRABS

SEVIN DUST KILLS CRABS

Matt, do you have crabs? Or were you trying to catch crabs? I'm confused??? Or was that a different subject. On another note, how did your tank fare? Did the treatments work?

I didn't bother to catch any of the crabs, it just isn't worth it. The treatment seemed to work initially, but the main stag colony that was infected seems to be just as infested as it was before. I am going to up the dosage to 1 tab and then redo it every other day until there have been 3 treatments within 96 hours. The coral had no ill effects and nothing looks worse for wear, so I am just going to overdose the tank with interceptor until I am satisfied that I am not going to have to put up with this BS again.
