I have a DC to AC inverter that will run some equipment. It plugs into the car lighter and uses the car's battery. You can get them cheap at Harbor Freight and for more money at Radio Shack and elsewhere. A 300watt model is less than $40 at some places.
Our power has been on and off atleast 5 times, but never for more than a minute or so. Hopefully everyone is faring well. Sounds like a lot of us are going to be hitting the stores for UPSs.
I had to come in to work to surf RC. Going back to the house now to re-fire the generator. Been without power since 9:30am and sitting in my front room watching pieces of my fence and roof flutter down the street. Thankfully there is the generator.
Yeah I had to run to my supply house and grab a cord and plug for my generator so I could plug it into my house.
So far not so much as a flicker, but I'm ready muhahahahah.
Might run out to frys later and go shopping... Just for something to do..
I've got my HAM radio on and my local repeater has been switched over to emergency traffic only right now..
And got the scanner running right now as well, listening to all the stuff going down in the area..
Man I love this weather!!
Crazy
funman1, when your backfeeding, do you just take the circuits you want to backfeed off breakers and splice, or do you have a transfer switch or whats your method of choice? (just like to see other electricians methods)
Still pouring at Lake level here in Tahoe. Just took my dog for a walk and not even the North Face gear kept me dry.
We have had a few dimming type of flickers, but no outages. I think I am about two hours behind you guys in the direction of the weather.
I heard we may get six inches of snow an hour once it switches over. NUTS and I cancelled all appointments today so I wasn't out driving in this and rescheduled for tomorrow. Next week should be great skiing!
I have an extra 2 pole 30 amp breaker in my main panel. I hook my #10 4 conductor SO cord right to the breaker.
Disconnect from SMUD with my main Disconnect.
Then plug into the gene with a L1420R
This backfeeds my entire panel so I have everything I normally would, and we are just careful what we turn on so as not to overload the gene.
Then I just watch the neighbros house to know when power comes back on.
well i just got my power up! (generator) i decided to go and pick one up at teh local hdware store. not too bad of a price. I hooked it up to the tank/fridge and ofcourse pc hopefully smud will get the power going soon. thanks mike for the generator offer but i didn't see that till now and i had left work after i posted my post. thanks again though.
anyone have one of these battery backup things? i am out of town (%^&*%#$!!) and my mom is on her way over to my apt to check on my tank... my apt complex is currently without power still. depending on what she finds when she gets there, i may need to borrow something. crossing fingers that my tank is ok
