i just got a pair of black and white ocellaris clowns and want to breed them.

make sure they are well fed, not over fed, stable water parameters, steady lighting schedule, and have the patience of a monk. if they are the same size it may take a lot longer because they will have to fight foe dominance in order for one to change female. other than that there nothing much more than that you need.

well i got a pair from liveaquaria.com so they already changed from male to female and feamale is bigger than male. but how long should i keep the lights on? and how long should it take them to lay eggs? when the babies hatch can i put them in a breeder net? what is the best host anemone for them to breed? sorry for all the questions!

they dont require a nem in order to breed, but i have my b/w with a bubble tip. if you are going to get one i would suggest that or if you have the room a carpet of some sort. i usually keep my lights with the natural photo period ( lights on around 7 and off around 630).
depending on the age, once they reach around a year of age they most likely have reached sexual maturity. and i would say the breeder net is a no go. i would set up a separate 5 1/2 - 10g tank with an airstone and a small sponge filter for the fry to grow out in, this will allow you to feed them the rotifers/phyto they need at such early stages with out fouling up your display tanks water, you are going to want the same exact parameters as the tank the eggs were laid in for the grow out tank, fill the grow out tank with water from a water change on the display and you will probably need to do 15% water changes on the grow out tank daily.

ok thanks! what kind of sponge filter do you recommend and what website can i get them from. also what website can i get air stones? and for the nem i got a bubble tip and a sebae. so that way they can choose. should i wait until the babies hatch to take them out of the main tank?

ok thanks! i'm going to go buy that book tommorow at my book store. but what sponge filter do i need and what website can i get it from? i guess i'll just get regular airstones from the lfs.

The main thing you need is patience. It will be a while(possibly years) before they start to lay eggs.

ok i feel sort of stupid asking this but i'm not exactly sure what a sponge filter is. it doesn't say sponge filter on drs.foster&smith so what it called?

Thanks Gresh.....I thought I might have made up a word hehe.
btw....are you going to bring any products to Denver for ReefStock? (sorry for the thread hijack)

fishkid6692, you can get airstones from your LFS, i think it would be a waste of a credit card payment to order airstones or a sponge filter for that matter online. you can get both at any petstore that has fish supplies.
and to answer your question about whether to take the babies out after they hatch; if you wait that long, chances are that you will have no babies to collect. if the other tank inhabitants havent eaten the eggs already they will certainly eat the fry, and the clowns may even do the same as well. the best thing to is figure out what spot the clowns like to spawn when they actually start to and then place some removable structure there like a fake rock, ceramic tile and i hear that a plexiglass or acrylic peice works too. put that in the spot and when they lay on that, pull it out and place it into the grow out tank. be prepared to be bitten by the clowns when this happens or anytime you plan to put your hand in the tank, they like to go for the spot between your fingers!

no you have to make sure you have sufficient air on the fry Im preparing to do this in a few days mine finally layed eggs on my ceramic tile...Im going to place them in a 5 gallon tank and put a few air stones in front of the eggs to keep good circulation on the eggs to keep algae from building up on them..then once the eggs hatch feed them rotifers 2 times a day for 3 days and at day 4 use baby brine shrimp(newly hatched)
keeping the water clean from ammonia & detrius..afetr day 10 or so try to switch the foods up a bit so they don't become dependant on live foods. This is what I have learned so far Im sure I am missing some good tips!

can you please post pics so i can see what you do with the airstones and the eggs? and i need to start a rotifer culture but i need to know what size tank i need.

you can do a rotifer culture in water bottles and sit them in front of flourescent lights or even a window i will try to find some links to some good set ups like this, i would post pics of my small culture in my dorm room but i have no camera, maybe next years scholarship money will help me out a bit

ok i went to my lfs for a sponge filter and they don't know wht i'm talking about. can someone give me a brand of sponge filter? and some pics with the airstones and the eggs! thanks!
