he got caught in the tube while draining water for a water change. We got him cut out but it was too late... can I add another? I've read sometime if the new one is smaller it might work.. I feel awful!
Yeah. Replacing males is generally easier than replacing female clownfish. When you get a new one, make sure to replace it with a known male or juvenile.
I usually like to QT for 4 weeks. During that time, you should be able to look for brooklynella, ich, internal worms, etc. If I find something wrong, the fish gets treated accordingly, and usually spends more time in QT.
I recently had to replace one of my clowns from a pair. I got one of those $10 breeders nets and kept him in there for a 3-4 days while the other got used to it. It seemed to do the trick because there were no problems when I released the new one.

I replaced a male with a juvenile after the October storm five or six years ago. The female survived. The pair is thriving and breeding regularly. Ther may be a little pushing ansovinng initially.
All of my pairs (six) came from adding two juvenites together initialy. If I have to replace one of a pair, I'd use a juvenile .
The female will be dominant. The surviving old male if that's the case will dominate and become a female.
I qaurantine and treat via tank transfer;it takes 12 days. Then an optional 2 week period of additional observation for maladies other than ich in some cases.
