I have been educated on Steve Tyree. My next guy on the list is Shawn Bennett. Who is he? Every time I see the name I see an incredible coral.

I would like to have some bennett frags one day.

there is a lot of the named corals out there. the thing is that to get the person that found that coral for them Steve Tyree is just the name but there is other people that they get the coral from one is Matt Hoper he found " War Coral" and gave Steve a frag. that is how it starts.

As far as I know Shawn is out of the hobby and Eric Fragfarmer got his colonies.

I have 3 Bennett pieces and they are nice. The tricolor, yellow tort and tenuis.

I heard the same tory, and you are correct Eric owns his corals.

so who and when do they decide if you captured a peice nice and rare enough to be called a limited edition anyway. no offence but it sounds like a catch phrase to me.

It is a catch phrase. It's much easier to get these from the hundreds of other hobbiests that have them or the stores that sell them.

That is unless it trully is unique . Not every hobbiest has gems or what other think are gems.

Some corals are very hard to attain or are extrodinary IMO and that of course is reflected in price . Take my avatar for example . I bet you would have a hard time finding a handful of people that have a piece just like it . Believe me I have been trying for the last year. I have seen close but not purple polyps.

People that pick LE or exotics are those who are known in the biz to have an eye for the extrodinary and rare color morphs . Tyree is Prime example you can go thru reeffarmers lists and really you can only find close variations of the LE's but not identical.Every once in awhile you may score . But you definately won't find purple monsters being imported all the time . Same with torts I have yet to see a large Blue tort make it inland. Another is the green with purple rim cap . Even though this coral is now every where I haven't seen one imported ( prolly because its not that common.)

I agree though it is used as a catch phrase.

One of the reasons that people like Shawn Bennett, Steve Tyree, Mike Paletta, and many others have corals named after them is due to the length of time they have been in the hobby. They were in the hobby when if you could just keep a stoney coral alive for any period of time it was a succes. Over time they have developed and implimened a lot of the coral care philosophies that we take for granted. Because have been in the hobby such a long time they have colleced a great many unique corals in either growth formation or color. They were constanly asked for frags of these corals. When the people who recieved frags of the corals were asked about the frags it's refered to as a Shawn Bennett such and such..

I buy corals based on what they looks like and not what they are called. That being said, if I could do what tyree or shawn are doing, I would too. Got to admit it's a great marketing scheme.

Well, Shawn never gave his corals their own names. He had a very nice tank with some very nice corals, and sold frags out of his tank to help pay his electric bill. People started naming his corals "The Bennett 'xxx'". All around good guy.

why does everyone come down on these guys? They have some nice corals. If you think they cost too much and can get equally beautiful corals cheaper then do so.

Not everyone has a good LFS that has nice frags.

this thread isn't about ethical sales I was just wondering who Shawn is. I saw some pieces on fragfarmer.com and I just thought they were nice looking corals. It said that they are being sold to continue his legacy or something like that I thought maybe he was deceased.

If I can ever get my life together I wouldn't mind getting a few nice pieces like these so I have better "bartering" material for trading with others who have nice pieces.

Except in the often case where Tyree, etc, gets a coral from a hobbiest. Generally, that coral gets spread around the hobbiest's area, and isnt even close to rare in that area.
