I Need It!

Thought this might be fun...

I'd be willing to guess that just about everyone on here has had that moment where they go... "I NEED IT!" Could be in a LFS, online, checking out someone else's tank....etc. Regardless, you don't care how much it costs, you just know you can't live without it, and it must be yours... RIGHT NOW! Could be a fish, coral, or piece of equipment.

So anyway...

...Whatcha got?
...Would you still pay that much for it now?
...and most importantly... was it worth it?

*You don't have to put the price if you don't want to*

Since I started it... I'll lead off.

ORA Red Planet

Ran across a pic online... Immediately called Salty Critter, and asked them to reserve me one ASAP on their next order.

Cost $65 I believe?

Definitely worth it, and the three hour round trip it took to get it. I would most certainly buy it again for that price. Absolutely crazy color for a tiny 1" frag. The side away from the camera, facing the MH, is bright pink/red.

I'll do one for Laura too... although it may get me in trouble. :eek2:

ORA Joe the Coral

Was rumored to be the "next big thing" from ORA back in November I believe. Anyway, no one had these yet, and Laura spotted one in the Diver's Den. Needless to say, the decision was made as fast as it takes you to type in your credit card information and hit send.

I think we ended up paying $110 after shipping.

After owning it for a month or two... I say ehhh... it's alright I guess. Definitely not worth $110 though. Lesson learned... wait for the pics to come out before buying.

AC3, PX1000, 3 PH probes, ORP probe, Ozone generator ... Priceless LOL (or $100 if you ask my wife)

Dang... You guys have beat me by far but I am still very very new to the hobby so something better will come i'm sure but when I was first getting my tank and stuff setup, I needed a powerhead in the worst kind of way...

I spent almost $35 on a maxi-jet 400.. pitiful that a store would actually sell these things for that much... I can buy 2 1200's for 30$!!

Stunning "purple", 11inch, "Rhodactus" mushroom, 79$ from divers den. Under 20k, 400w mh for thier picture it was as purple as Ive ever seen a coral, in my tank its brown. They listed it as 11inches, it opened 13 the first day and has been measured just over 16. It was also listed as a rhodactus sp. when its actually Amplexidiscus fenestrafer (giant cup mushroom) (I dont care abou the id difference).

I saw it at a time I was feeling a little down about how my tank looked, and it gave me a big enjoyment boost, even though the color didnt match thier picture.

Would I pay that much again, probably not, Ive got a lot more stuff in my tank now and wouldnt sacrifice that much space to 1 item.
Was it worth it, Yes, still a great conversation piece, draws people to the tank from across the room.

I moved it in early September, and tore the foot, the parent colony still doesnt look perfect, though it looks great during the day when the lights are on. The place that I moved it from a few pieces of foot remained and I now have 2 frags that open about an inch across and a couple other smaller frags that are partially shaded so havent grown as well.

I've done this so many times, I can't even list all those items I just had to have over the years.

Suffice it to say, I can be impulsive at times.

Okay, one that happened a few months ago. Zoanuts.com had a fantastic deal on Ricordeas, and I immediately called to order $200 worth, rather than risk the shopping cart taking too long to process. And I added a pretty Efflo to that order at the same time. :D

simple, frag plugs. I had to have some in mid October. So with gas at around $4, I spent $25 in gas to buy $8 worth of frag plugs. But then again, I had to have them.

Brand new tank on ebay. In Youngstown, over an hour away. Auction ends a week before christmas. My truck has a real bad tie rod end. No way to pick it up. But wait, I have my Christmas bonus. My better half will understand. I'm still in the doghouse....but man is this tank sweet! hehe

Your 90g TJ. It was great deal but that was the last thing I really needed and now I may end up trying to sell it before we move in a few months.

Well, this has been pretty much how I have always put my tanks together. First it starts with a "I think I need a....", shortly after, obsessive compulsion sets in and before I know it WHAM, its here and I too am in the doghouse.

Regrets never ..... impulsive always...... do i care .........never !!!!!!

And i am always in the doghouse ....ten years and counting!!!!

Sorry to hear that... I regret selling it, probably more than the 220, but I had nowhere to even store it. Hopefully you'll be able to get it set up, or someone will take it off your hands. It's a slick setup.

I can definitely relate. I was on a hunt a few weeks ago, and I think all of Pittsburgh was out... maybe there's a rule in PA I wasn't aware of... no frag plugs or something.

i agree with discoreefrover and serpentman. I can count on my fingertips the no. of times i have not made an impulsive purchase on fish on corals. i think if they do not create an impulse more than likely you will be bored with your buy by the time the thing gets in your tank. What i am hoping for is that impulse will be a right decision more often than a wrong one. And yes i do regret some of the buys i have made

250w Metal Halide for my 75. Thought I needed it for sps to thrive, turned out my lights wasn't the problem. Spent over $400 for the setup, now trying to convince my wife why our elec rate jumped so high :). Was it worth it? In the long run yes, using them for a new tank hopefully. I have had soo many other impulse buys that is somewhat worth it and some are just plain old stupid.

I wish that I could figure how to put photos on here. I saw one about 15 years ago and absessed about owning one. Then about 4or5 years ago some came in the contry, The ones that I saw where radiant/ florecent BLUE These Squamosas are one of the Beauties in the sea. Would I pay the same, I dought it. Mine is abought 8" now and as beautiful as always, Peace and happy holidays.
