I think i'm cycled & have a few questions...

I don't think anyone has answered you questions...so I will give my two cents.

Thanks zoafarm! I will add my cuc i think, and hopefully get a QT tank cycled and up and running while my cuc are in the main tank, i don't think i will QT the cuc though.

If i do set up a QT tank it will be a very basic one and just for observation. Being so new to this i think i'd likely do more harm than good if i tried the TTM method or anything more advanced.

Is this QT tank ok?

Is this QT tank ok?

image.jpg Sorry the pic is sideways!

Managed to borrow this from a neigbour, it is actually bigger than my nano tank but ive only filled it to 7 gallons. can fill it up more if need be.

I found an elite jet flo 50 filter (its meant for freshwater or tropical cold water does it really matter?) and cut off some sponge from my main tank + put in this filter.

The filter also has a cartridge with white rocks in it as well as black/carbon, sorry if its silly but what are the white rocks? are they meant for freashwater fish or something?

I also plan on getting a heater and an (maybe) airstone for it tomorrow. I want to cycle it before i QT fish (even if i dont need to) so can i add fish food to do this? (dont want to use shrimp and i dont have access to ammonia).

Will the QT tank cycle faster with the filter media from my cycled tank?

Am i doing this right?? I just want a basic quarantine to observe the fish for a few weeks before adding to DT, i dont want to do TTM and im not experienced enough.

Sounds like a reasonable plan to me. You can use fish food in the QT tank to make sure it has some biological filtration capacity.

Since your fish store is so far away, you might want to get some Prime or Aussie equivalent that will remove ammonia from the water, in an emergency. (Yes, I know, more stuff to buy.:-))

I'm just guessing but some HoB filters these days come with media just to provide surface area for the Bacteria (like the sponge, but doesn't trap dirt). If that's what the white rocks are, leave them there.

Good for you for making the effort.

While i would obviously prefer to quarantine my fish i currently just cannot afford another tank, heater, filter, wave maker/powerhead, light etc. The first fish i add will most likely be the only inhabitant (apart from cuc) for quite a few months because I'm really focusing on corals. I do plan on setting up a quarantine tank but it won't be until i have the funds.
There is not a good reason that you first tank can't count as your QT. this is assuming that as you say, your current tank is cycled, you can use prime if its not and you won't add anything else for 6 weeks or so.
You could have time to purchase another tank for your DT.

You can also use 2-3 buckets you can get at your local hardware store for fairly cheap for the TTM. Then all you will really need are 2 small heaters and 2 small powerheads. I was planning on QTing all my fish but long story short, I panicked and two clowns went straight into my DT. Two weeks later, they both came down with either ich or marine velvet and one of them has pretty bad tail rot. I'm not sure if he's going to make it. But now my two clowns are in QT and my DT is going to be fallow for 72 days. Lesson learned
