i want a really vicious and aggressive mantis for my tank. it is only 10 gallons though. when you make suggestions please tell me what to feed it. thanks!

Well i just got a 3.5" chiragra and could not be happier with it. I acclimated it today and the first thing it did was beat a emerald crab in an unholy fashion. The poor sucker actually tried to launch itself out of the tank.... I guess they're suppose to be a little more shy, but mine didnt go back into his den until lights out.

where is a good website to order mantis shrimp from? and what mantis is diurnal and readily available. also what is the diff. between a spearer and a smasher?

Stomatopod.com is one of the best sites I can think of, though honestly they don't have much in stock ATM (They have quite a few orders due soon)

mantis shrimp should be fed a diet of 2-3 frozen marine foods, soaked in selcon once a week or so. Feed once every 2-3 days. Feed live foods at least once a month for stimulation, though more is better.

Smashers have a calcified club on their raptorial appendage to "smash things" and spearers do not have the calcified club but have much longer and barbed raptorial appendages so they can slice and stab things. If you go with a spearer you'll want P. ciliata as they are about the only active and easy to care for spearers available.

Check out stomatopod.com. I've had very good experiences ordering from them.

N. wennerae is commonly available and is diurnal (and would fit in a 10 gallon).

The difference is the way they attack... spearers will spear their prey (typically fish and shrimp) while smashers will smash their prey (typically crabs and snails). There are other differences, like habitat, so check Dr. Roy's guide.

You can try contacting tampabaysaltwater.com for N. wennerae.

I definitely wouldn't put a peacock in a 10 gallon. Recommendation for a peacock is 30+ gallons.

Sealifeinc.net has some mantis in stock. including large P. ciliata. Plus they have great customer service.
