Looks like bryopsis. I just had it. Raise your Magnesium to 1600 to 1700 and it should be gone in a few days. It'll take a LOT of magnesium to do it, but it'll be worth it. Then you can gradually let the magnesium level come down with water changes.

From what I've found, you don't necessarily need Kent Tech M. Its just water, magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfide. You can get those from Bulk Reef Supply pretty cheap. I went with magnesium chloride since I use it for dosing anyway.

yES, 100% SURE that is what it is..buy Kent Tech M...plus a magnesium test kit....Get your mag elevated to 1700 to 1800 and leave it there for awhile...it will kill it for good. There is no magnesium substitute, you have to use tech m..there must be a by product in it that kills the stuff. I have switched over from DIYS mixes to tech m because of this. Buy the big bottle from MD and keep it on hand.

I had it, and agree with Kynan, tried regular mag flake and it did nothing. Tech M literally killed it off in hours. If you have some tough patches that won't seem to die with the tank dosing method you can turn off all of your flow, like during a water change, and apply it very carefully to the stubborn patch with a syringe and leave it there for like 15-20 min. That patch will die off as well within a day or so. Good luck, this stuff is hard to beat once you have it in the tank.

ok thanks for the input guys ive been pulling it out by the handfull it seems for a while ill buy some tech m and get to killing this stuff.just for hahas how did this stuff start growing ,like ant other algea?

Stop pulling it by hand. Bryopsis spreads in a few ways, the roots spread, fragmentation like coral and release of "spores", incorrect term but the actual word escapes me right now, when you disturb the fronds. The fronds are the feathery tips on each mature stalk. These catch nutrients like a filter feeder and enables them to grow and spread. This is what makes this particular hair algae hard to kill. It can thrive in very low light as long as it gets is nutrients from food. It will make it much worse if you continue to pull it. I learned the hard way :). Do the mg "treatment" and it will kill it off. Do you grow macro algae of any kind?

hey i saw that realm of pets had that an they had some type a of slug or something that ate it they were kinda cool, they were white an black

Sea hares are supposed to eat it but after it eats all the algae you need to find a new home for the sea hare or it will starve. Also they aren't the best at finding the algae you want them to eat. From my experience raising your mag with tech m while running carbon and water changes to keep your nutrients low while it dies is the best way to beat it. Pulling it out by hand just makes it spread. When you raise your mag level you will want to test your water to find out where your at then figure out a dosing regimen that will bring you mag up to 1700 over the course of a week. Too much of a raise in mag too quick can kill alot of corals. Also very high levels of mag can be toxic so you don't want to over shoot the 1700-1800 mark.

yeah pulling it prolly is what made it spread so fast throug the tank and i do not grow macro algea why do you ask?

ok huys i got the test kit and some tech m i tested and im right about 960 +or - from what im reading thats fairly low, adding 1 ml per gal each day will raise it to between 1250-1350 total if i want to elavate it to 1700 how many ml per gal do i want to add per day? what do you guys do,daily dosing weekly and how much per dosing have you found is ok to do without adversly affecting the tank? thanks for the advice in advance dave.

I would recommend daily dosing to bring the levels up. I was dosing a 220 gallon tank, so I ended up doubling the dose daily to get the levels high then just dosed as needed to maintain. I would say go maybe up to 1.5x the recommended dosage to raise the levels. I did have some bleaching of two elegance corals when I did this as well as my RBTA's, but they all recovered without any issues.

ok so ill have to watch my rbta.ill try going the 1.5 like your saying how long did you leave the levels at or around the 1700 ppm ?

It was a while ago...but I think it took about a week for the algae to completely melt away. It may have been slightly less, but I wanted to make sure everything died.

ok so if i got this right iml per gal is 34ml then if im going 1.5x the normal dosing il be dosing 50 ml per day do i got it right?

I would start the first couple of days at the recommended dosage to see how your system reacts. If you find the levels are barely moving up, then slowing increase the amount you dose. You don't want to shock the system (that may have been what caused my bleaching as I tend to be impatient at times).

Dave,

I couldnt see your pics of this algae. Can you post them again. Im having a small algae problem now. I would like to see if its the same stuff. Thanks

Rich
