You should post a new thread, "How to avoid the algae phase in your new tank", here on RC. So multiple people could try it. Avoiding the algae phase has long been a dream for many!
I'd also be curious to see if it has applications to a marine planted tank like mine. My first reaction is no, since the accepted methodology is to get plants in right from the start. And nitrifying bacteria compete with plants for nutrients, so they are generally deemphasized.
But could it be adapted? I would have liked to avoid an algae phase in my planted tank too. I wonder if letting nitrifying bacteria getting established before introducing plants (and light) would work. Would it create too hostile an environment to get plants started? Hmm!
