Hi There

I'm new to Marine Fish-keeping (18 months) but have kept fresh, tropical & coldwater fish for many years. I have a D & D 24g Nano & a 420lt Main with 70lt sump. I'm having a problem with brown algae in the main tank, but all the test results are registering zero. Though this tank has only been setup some 3-4 months all mature rock, matured water from previous setup, fish & cleanup crew are all from a previous setup I had. This algae (I know it's bacteria) has only just started to appear on the sand & if left will form on the glass. I use TMC Aquaray LED's but am unsure of the best length of time to have them running. Any advice/pointers would be greatly appreceiated

Hey there, names Shane... New to the saltwater scene and I've heard tons of great things about this forum so hopefully I can get that same experience as everyone else..!! My tank that I'm using as a beginner tank, is my 29g rectangular tank that i've converted from fresh to salt... Hopefully everything goes fine, so far so good..

Hi to everyone on RC! I've been in the hobby for about 3 years. I currently have a 60gal and a 6gal reef. I've had 14gal and 33gal reefs before. I don't keep anything to difficult of exotic yet, but i am trying to get some good experience under my belt and eventually move up to it.

Hell everyone! My name is Javony and I'm somewhat new to the saltwater scene. I've had three tanks in the past but so many things have changed that I feel like a newbie all over again. Filtration and lighting has come so far in the past 8 years. I recently went out and purchased a 115g rimless with a 40g breeder tank as a sump. I made all my purchases by recommendation of the LFS (exact same setup as their display tank). I currently have the tank filled and running but waiting to add live rock and cycle it.
Here's a quick question for everyone:
I've had my tank filled and running for a week now, the salinity and temperature are correct (79 degrees and 1.025) how long if at all do I have to wait to add LR and get my tank cycling? and help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hello, Jimmy here.
I'm pretty new to the hobby, only working on my second tank. My first was a small 30 gal that was doing great until my power went out for a week and i was away for work, my wife tried but it was a wipe out. So i've put together my second tank now. Its a 100 gal with a 55 gal sump. up and running for several weeks now and looking great. I have a few fish and couple corals. I also bought a sebae but found out later i was a little miss informed and they are difficult.. i'm doing what i can and it seems to be doing well. That and my retarded peppermint shrimp are really the only concernes i have thus far.
I've read some of ya'll threads over the last couple months and found it a great place for opinions and the like.
Thank you,
Jimmy

Hello RC

Hello RC

Hello my name is Dusty. I have been in salt water for 10 yrs. Currently have a 120G with some fish and small mushrooms and a struggling piece of coral from a buddies tank that was practically eatin off by his fish. Running a Aqueon Proflex Model 4 sump, Coralife 150 HQI lighting and new Hydor powerhead, and some modified old maxijet 1200 power heads. Tunze auto top off. I started with a 55G tank and made my to a successful softie 75G tank. From then went to a 265G and had a die off while was on vacation so just got back into it with the 120G. During my year break between tanks I got an infection due to a cut from a rock and was in the hospital for 4 days so after recovering from the loss and the bills couldn't resist getting back into the hobby with hope for better success.

Hello rc!!!

Hello rc!!!

Hi all :celeb1:

My name is Erik, I'm a resident (read: broke and in-debt) physician in Evanston, Illinois. I've been a member of Reef Central for awhile now and am currently still in the "research" phase of planning a reef tank. I'm a freshwater and FOWLR convert who has been out of the aquaria loop for several years as medical school and constantly moving from apartment to apartment made it difficult to establish a bona fide tank. I am moving into a more permanent residence with my fiance this fall where I hope to put my research to work and finally start the long-awaited reef tank! I will be going the nano-reef route, and was initially 99% sold on the CADlights 22g until I learned about the highly acclaimed PicO Aquariums. In debating whether to go with a Manta Ray or Deep Blue, I learned that the company is closed for the season and reopen in the fall. Hopefully in this time the price of LEDs will come down: I'm not much of a DIYer and the new Aqua Illumination Sol Nano and NanoConcepts LED + T5 Hybrid lamp look awesome! In the meantime I'll buff up on more research and continue to get even more excited!

Hi All,
My name is Philippe and I just started the hobby. I leave in San Francisco and got a used 40Gal tank out of craigslist. It is 30" long 13" deep and 24" high.
I have a remora C protein skimmer, a Fluval 304 filter 2x koralia 500g/h and 1 750 g/h.
So far the population in my tank is:
2 clown fish
1 skinny fish yellow in the front and purple in the back (came with the tank)
1 fish that eat sand
1 cleaner shrimp
5 turbo
3 hermit crab
some snale that goes under the sand (no idea how many but may be a couple)
1 bleu start fish
2 feather duster (about 3 inch big)
1 white anemone with purple dot at the end
1 regular looking anemone
1 torch
1 frogspawn
1 plate coral
1 purple mushroom

some rock
some sand

my light came with the take and I think they are 2x65W compact.
I have so many question I don't even know where to start :)

Hi From Upstate NY

Hi From Upstate NY

I am doing this backwards since I already posted but here goes: My name is Loren and my husband and I are trying a salt water tank again with fish and coral and some inverts. We have previously had cichlids and discus and a salt tank but when we moved the fish up here they all died. I joked with my husband that back in the day when we had three tanks in the finished basement that we should just submerge the whole basement and make it one big tank. Anyway we had kids and now that one is in college and the other is going in a year we have some time to start a tank again. I used to scuba dive in south Florida where I lived for 6 years and was going to catch my own fish and start a tank but I changed jobs and moved to CT. I don't think i could catch fish nowadays, it's probably illegal. After I met my husband we moved from CT to upstate NY where we are now. Right now we only have a 30 gallon. We cycled it about 6 weeks and have added the following over the course of a month or so: Blastomussa, yellow tang, coral beauty, clown fish, peppermint shrimp (yep we bought some live rock with Aiptasia on it before we knew better), pulsating xenia, green centered polyp, brittle star, assorted snails, condylactis and RBTA. The RBTA was on a snail until I removed him when he was getting too close to to the condy. Now he is happily ensconced in a spot that looks fine even though he is right next to the xenia he has not harmed it. We won't add anymore fish since it's only 30 gallons and we hope the clown will live in the RBTA once it grows large enough. Our distant LFS which is really a fantastic store with loads of rare corals and fish, has been very helpful. This forum has been an excellent source of info as well. When we started the tank we bought the aptasia rock and the condy from an LFS that's not very knowledgeable so now we drive over an hour to the other store. In the beginning we lost a few fish to ich. We treated with Cu. They died. We bought new fish, we got another case of ich when we added new fish because not only did we not quarantine but we didn't realize that the ich was still viable in the tank as we never removed the clown which didn't have ich! So this time we moved all three fish to the Q tank and treated with hypersalinity (1.011-1.012). They improved but the coral beauty got bloat. We treated with tetracycline and now it's fine. The clown was never sick but he's in there anyway. I am pleased as punch that we saved the fish. They will stay in the Q tank until the 6 weeks is up as long as they remain symptom free. The Q tank is only 10 gallons but they all appear to be happy other than the occasional aggressive posture of the tang towards the coral. I am surprised at how excited I am to see the fish when I wake up in the AM. The tank is in my son's room who probably isn't happy with the parent traffic due to the tank.! Lol. We plan to get a bigger tank after we successfully manage this one for about a year. We still have an old fashioned under gravel filter and a powerhead but our protein skimmer arrives Monday and we invested in a refractometer. I am the chief water tester etc, my husband takes care of the power heads etc so I may not have described that aspect of the tank correctly. One day we will have a sump and get up to date as well. here are our tank pics ttp://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150175626359294.320868.685929293&l=748f5ccb19

Hello

Hello

Just wanted to say hello,

New to the salt water hobby but currently have two tanks running a 55 gallon and a 29 bio cube. Currently attempting to breed oscelaris clownfish and syncheropis splendidus mandarins, :bounce3: my clownfish are currently courting and have taken to a clay pot I added to the tank. My pair of mandarins have bonded and routinely do courtship rituals after the lights go down. They still haven't quite gotten the trick of it yet though... So no eggs so far.

Thanks for the help and time guys

What up people!

Hi All!

My name's Eddie and I'm brand new to keeping saltwater aquariums. I just converted my 37 gallon Eclipse system from goldfish to what will hopefully be a reef tank soon. I've been keeping goldfish for the last 12 years and have only recently started learning about reef systems. Hoping to learn a lot. Glad to be a part of the community.

Eddie O.
