New to RC

Hey there! My name is Valerie. After much influence from my Hubby spollock818, I have come to love our little ocean. I never took an interest in his "fish porn" until very recently and have come to love it. I am very new to RC, and the hobby altogether, so go easy on me.

Hey RC...

Ive had fresh water aquariums in the past, but am very new to saltwater.
Just started my first tank - 36 gallon bow front. Put in 40lbs of live sand, 40 lbs of carribean live rock. 2 weeks into the cycle and anxious to get some critters, but patient too. I plan to start fowlr then progress to corals as my exp and confidence goes up.

Hello, my name is Tommy and im new to this forum. Im still somewhat new to keeping fish but plan to advance. I now have a 55g cichlid tank that has been going strong for about 3 years. I am planning to add more tanks as i learn more and I am excited about trying my first attemp at saltwater soon.

Waiting for my new tank to arrive!

Waiting for my new tank to arrive!

my 45 gallon tall tank (36 x 12 x 24) is being delivered with live sand and live rocks on Tuesday. they dealer I bought it from is setting it up and filling it with real ocean water gathered from off the coast of Catalina Island here in Southern California.

They'll be helping me get it going but I am sure I will be on these forums alot asking for advice. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey RC!

Hey RC!

Hey RC my name is Lee and i've been keeping fish of and on for about 15 years and just decided about 5 months ago it was time to make my dream come true and start a saltwater tank. I have a 55 corner tank with a 20 gal sump, and MH's. I look forward to learning from all of you and sharing our mistakes in hopes someone else doesn't make our dumb mistakes!

Hello all! New to the hobby here and finally registered after studying and reading posts on here for over a year now. Yesterday made my first purchases towards my first saltwater tank. I couldn't pass up the 10% off for Labor Day at Aquacave... Decided to go with the Finnex 48" DL series T5 with LED's. Also got ATI bulbs for it and treated my self to a couple of Finnex heaters too. Couldn't resist.

Well I now understand how addicting this hobby can be as it now involves money, not just night after night of reading and pricing, putting in cart and taking out. I was in so much euphora after I bought my light that I went on ebay just to see if it had the skimmer I wanted (bubble magus NAC-7). Of course I found one and it said make an offer. So I thought I would just low ball and see. $200 later after shipping I now own my second piece of equipment. Good deal though as its a $250 unit.

Now next week I plan on purchasing my tank. I'm not made of money so I got to spread it out a bit. My LFS, real nice owner, has a good deal on a 75 gallon corner overflow Perfecto tank with nice sleek black stand (not the typical pine). The tank is $199 with overflow kit included and the stand is $200. I have been looking around for about a year now and I just think its finally time. I would of course like to go bigger but apartment and moving eventually and of course cost, I think this is a nice size for the value.

I plan on eventually upgrading lighting down the road. I really wanted the Aqua Illuminations LED's, wow do they look nice, but at about $1700 for the 3 units to light the tank I just couldn't make that type of jump right away. I'm sure I will go through some trials and would like to get the tank up with water in it by the end of the year. The funny thing is my fiance is all for this. She hates dogs so this is are agreement in place of a dog. She was actually mad that I bought the Finnex at $400 instead of the Aqua Illuminations at $1700. I feel like her support is too good to be true sometimes.

Well that about sums up my story. I wanted to say hi to everyone and get my name out there as I will probably be asking alot of questions. I'm kinda a talker if you can't tell. As soon as I get the light I'll try having some fun with posting a picture. I love when people post pictures, they really are worth a 1000 words.

Been in the Hobby since 2/2010 when I started reading reading reading. After 30 years of amazement over my Uncle's saltwater tanks since I was a we little lad I finally picked up the books and got on the net and started reading to see if this was something I really wanted to try. The more I read the more my fascination grew. After about 8 months of reading, planning, and looking for a reasonably priced used tank, I bought a used 180 dual corner overflow tank with sump, pumps, skimmer, live rock, T5 and MH lighting, and more than $1000 worth of fish and coral all for $950. My Uncle who has been in the hobby since I was knee high to a grasshopper helped his green nephew break down and move the tank to it's new home and has been fish sitting all of my fish in one of his ~220 gallon reef tanks since move day for the last 10 months or so while I got the tank set back up and added other fish from my stocking list that needed to go in before the larger ones that came with my tank. He is currently fish sitting my tomato clown, a regal tang, a foxface and a purple tang. Unfortunately in the past 10 months we have lost a few fish that came with my tank. The unfortunate losses were a diamond goby lost to a tile surfing incident, a copperband butterfly, and one half of my pair of regal tangs. I gave all the corals and some other extras, reef lighting, to my uncle for helping me get going and fish sitting for me. I have been working on obtaining and Q'ing the fish on my list that need to go in the tank before the fish that came with the tank and am almost to the point I can start to bring my fish home after nearly a year. had some ups n downs lost my favorite new fish to a tile surfing incident after leaving the tank lid open one night. I'd love to put a mated pair (not for reproduction purposes, but so they will get along) of flame angels in my Display but have had trouble finding any pairs. i have tried to Q a coral beauty and get it into my tank, but it died of some unknown issue and then I attempted a flame angel in my Q next and it died the same strange way the coral beauty did. Not taking any chances I broke down and deep cleaned my Q tank and have been getting it's filters cycled to the point i can add fish to it again. It's been a long 3 summer months of deep cleaning the Q tank and getting the filters prepped to support life again in the Q tank. Now I'm back to looking for a flame angel pair and a replacement Black Lined sleeper goby to replace the one I lost due to tile surfing. I'm also nearing the end of life on my current T5 bulbs and am looking into a DIY LED setup which is how i stumbled across this great local resource.

hello there ! My name is Fred. I'm running a small 20 freshwater since 2005.
Maybe 4 month ago, i was surfing a thread on a car forum about reef tank and saltwater fishtank. Let me tell you, that i was blown away by the pictures !!

I searched a lot about this hobby and bought a 55 gallons to start my tank. Its my first one and a love just look at it everyday trying to see how its evolving.

Anyway, i didnt have the space for a big one with a stand and everything so i made myself a DIY stand. Eventually i would like to get one in a better spot of the house.

The size of my tank is not helping for placing my powerhead , skimmer as its only 12 inch wide...

It could be prettier too but hey at least its working ;)

Here my setup
Tank is a Tetra 55 gallons
DUAL T5 HO GLO BRAND
Jebo skimmer 182 II
Tunze Turbelle stream 6065
Koralia 2 Powerhead
Eheim 1766 Canister ( only to circulate No media in it )
about 50 lbs of various liverock

Anyway here a pic , I did put the LR with no real position , i plan to have some fish in here, i made some recess and hole.

my skimmer is not on the picture just installed it today...

ok have a question do u need to have powerheads in the tank and which one for 75gal thanks sorry for the other post being in the wrong place

Hi all,

I am new here and coming back to the hobby after being away for ( gasp!) nearly 30 years. I picked up a 29 gal bio cube from craigs list that was already set up for salt. Not much is in it now... just a bit of live rock/sand a Nass snail a few more common snails and some little white stars that have 6 arms and look like they belong in a can of chicken and star soup. I want to eventually do a couple of jawfish, maybe a fire fish or 2 and the accompanying cleaning crew and soft corals. When I got the tank I took everything, including the water so as to disturb it as little as possible. However, we are still having a bit of a nitrate and phosphate spike... any and all suggestions are appreciated. Right now my Nitrate doesn't want to go below 40. Phosphate is elevated too. Anyway, its nice to find this place!

New to hobby...need some help

New to hobby...need some help

I have a 4 week old 75g tank.

Lights: Deep Blue Solar xtreme SE, 42448 Lamp Type : T5, G14 54WModel SE, 42448

55lbs of premium live rock: half live sand/half regular

Tank was filled with cheater salt water.

Eshopps rs100 sump with $200 skimmer (not sure model)

2 clown fish: 1 neon pseudo: 5 hermit crabs: 1 Snail: Rock with 10 purple mushroom corals: frag of Green star polyps.

I am excited to be apart of this new hobby and wanted to introduce myself. I have a couple of pictures to share and a question.

To me this looks like algae in both pictures. For the most part, this is only occurring on two rocks. The rest of the tank seems to be thriving as best as a new-cumber can tell. All fish and other coral seem happy. Water temp stays between 78 and 81.

I just cant seem to find exact pictures of similar situations on the web...so here I am!

What type of Algae is this and should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance for your help.
