If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello RC My name is Rob and I am totally new. I haven't purchased anything yet. I got rid of all my tanks a while ago and now looking to get back into it. I have limited space right now so i was thinking of starting with a 30 gal bio cube. I am looking for some guidance. I have always wanted a reef tank.

Hi guys. I'm new to the hobby. I had a few fresh water tanks when I was a kid but I never took care of them (parents did.) So basically this is my very first (on my own) tank. I'm pretty excited. I bought a 29 gallon Aqueon tank kit from my local pet store. Also picked up some live sand and a few damsels. I'm currently in the cycle process... I still need to get some live rock. I know my tank isn't high tech or up to par with some aquarist but hey, it's a start! I hope to learn a lot from this forum....

Starting out as a fish-only tank right now... :fish2:

Hello all. Just joined. I presently have an 8 gallon nano that is 6 years old. One clown and a cleanup crew
I am moving moving on up to a 110 gallon. Presently building the stand and refugium. Sure I will have tons of questions during this project so thanks in advance.

Hi everybody, just joined today. Starting my first SW tank soon. Have already taken in a lot of knowledge looking for much more! Thanks far in advance!!

Hello, I'm Mackus and new to the forum. I currently have a 29 gallon tank with a pair of clowns and a sixline wrasse and several inverts. A couple soft corals as well. Just bought a 125 gallon tall tank and research how to best go about making my upgrade. I'm actually just going to completely set up the 125 as a new tank, keeping the old 29 as well.

Hi all,

Hi all,

I am new here but not so new to the hobby, although I've been out of it for about 5 years. I have recently acquired a 110x high that was in very rough shape (well water top offs and no water changes that i know of). At one time this was a beautiful tank, now the only surviving inhabitant is a Scopas Tang my two year old daughter has named Shamu. At this point the aquarium is running with around 150# of live rock and some new power heads, a sealife skimmer and around 40 gallon water changes every week (5 weeks so far) to try and get the nitrates, phos., and silicates in check. In hindsight I should have cleaned the rock better and replaced the sand before setting the tank back up. I now have a more managable battle ahead of me thanks to the filter guys ro/di set up (sorry for the plug but the company is truly customer service oriented and it's the least i could do). At this point we are looking a another week before any new pets will be added, probably the obligitory ocellaris clown pair (two year old daughter). Well that's about it so far, Wish me luck.

Eric

Hello Reef Central, I have been in this hobby now for going on four years and love it!! I joined this forum to answer any questions and ask some as well. It is impossible to know everything in this hobby. I started with a biocube and 4 years later I have a 220 mixed reef. Look forward to talking with everyone. Thanks James

Hello everybody, I started reefing a little over a year ago and quickly got addicted. I currently have a 55g, 29g and a 14g and hoping to upgrade to a 150g aggressive tank and a 75g mixed reef real soon.

Hello

Hello

Hello RC. I was told this is the place to be if you're going to start a saltwater tank/reef tank and had questions that needed answers.

I have no prior aquarium experience (several friends/coworkers do), but looking forward the knowledge and joy I will get once my project is finished.

Heya folks, Ive been reading these forums for the last few weeks while getting ready to set up my first SW tank and decided it was time to hop into the community. I'm sure I'll have loads of questions, but this certainly looks like the place to ask them. I'm really excited to get my tank up and running. I'm still in the planning/equipment purchasing stages. I have a drilled 75g display and a 35g sump/refugium. Look forward to picking everyones more than knowledgable brains while I get this rolling though :-)

Hello

Hello

Hi all. I am just getting into the Reef game. I have had a freshwater for about a year. I've got a 50 (maybe 55) gallon tank and a 250 W heater to get going. Still trying to figure out what else I am going towards, especially with lighting as I am thinking LED.

History:

* Early 90's I had a Saltwater tank with a few fish and anemones but it was difficult to keep them. So I had a mostly Fish Only Tank
# Tank failed due to lack of funds (only in my teens at the time. Not too many people into saltwater)
# unable to setup again due to moving to new house.

* Late 90's I had a 55g Fish / LR tank (100 pounds imported Fiji) with dual 250 MH and 4 VHO Actinics. Deep Sand Bed 2 1/2 inches+ with Sump
# (Ahead of my time - experimentation):
Tank failed due to caulerpa outbreak during Refugium experiment + Extreme Heat from Lights + wrong type of light spectrum + Top-off Failure.
Tank was equipped with dual 35 gallon containers in the basement for RO/DI water making/ mixing and pumping to 1st floor. SUMP located on 1st floor below the tank with auto top-off. Auto-Top off failed and resulted in a reload of 35 gallons of cool water from the basement.
Due to caulerpa outbreak and water chemistry failure + loss of life = Tank + Rock scrapped and claimed a loss.
# unable to setup again due to moving to new house.

* 2001 - 75 Gallon Tank up for 1 Month
# Tank Failed 1 month into Deep Sand bed setup and Nitrification process. Power Failure while away resulted in the loss of the only 2 fish I had (no LR). Tank Scrapped for when I was really ready in my new house.

* 2011 - Ready - Again :D 12+ years later

Comments:
Looks like the Hobby changed a bit.
Lighting is finally here with LEDs (which is what I needed 12 years ago)

DeepSand Bed has been dropped ?!?! Are you serious? ... hahaha whats up with these new reefers. hahaha. woa?? -> High Flow External Pumps, Better Protein Skimmers (Damn these things are big now), Wicked Fast Internet Pumps, meh..

What I'm going to bring to the table for my setup:
=======================================
Let me quote my boy Eric Borneman, " There is no "Right" or "Wrong" way to manage corals in an aquarium, except fullying admitting that Mother Nature does it right... and we often do it wrong".

ESTIMATED SETUP:
--------------------

Tank:
------
75 or 90g (I may go 90 to get dual pre-drilled) - Thinking about it.

Sump:
-----
75g + - Possible wide spread sump via kiddy pool with Deep Sand Bed + Skimmer + Lights. Auto Top-Off 35g reserve pre-mixed

Target Light:
------------
LEDs (researching to build my own)
Research custom LEDs to support 440NM wavelength @ 6000-23k LUX at coral Depth. (F) PAR values ... it's all about the correct amount of LUX at the required wavelength for the coral. (we can debate later)
** as of now I'm research constant current PWM to control the Blues/Whites. Researching still.

Target Temp:
-------------
26-27 degrees C (28c max)

Water:
-------
PH: 8.2 - 8.4 (Noted: 8.0 at night and 8.5 noon)

Salinity: 34-37 ppt (1.027) target via refractometer

No3- below 0.25 ppm
PO4 - below .13 ppm
calc : between 400-420 ppm

BACKUP:
----------
6500w Generator to operate Pumps / Heater during extended loss
UPS: to power heaters / PowerHeads if needed
35 Gallon pre-mixed - circulated - heated - RO/DI water ready to go
35 Gallon - Fresh water (non-mix)

PRE-TANK:
-----------
10g w/Fluval 440 + 340 Filters for quarantine. Not sure on LEDs for this tank yet.
This is to eliminate ICH from new fish coming in if required.

Renewing my Hobby

Renewing my Hobby

hi Folks my name is Sunand Kallumadanda I go by kall I am not really new to the hobby, I had a saltwater tank about 15 yrs ago.. it was a 55g reef and fish tank. At that time i was a novice and even so I was able to maintain my tank with several fish, and some soft corals. I definitely had several losses in the process but had to give it up when I started Med school.Since finishing Med school, Residency and starting a job. I am now in the position to pursue this wonderful hobby again. with acess to this online community and reading several posts do i understand how ignorant I was!!!. well I have found some wounderful information and recommendations. I have a friend locally that is helping me build my stand and get me setup and he pointed me to RC.

so At this point I have purchased a Aqueon 210g Reef ready tank, stand and canopy is being built, Aqueon proflex mod 4 sump(to be set up with refugium), and 2 return pumps recomemded by my LFS..operator. I'm not sure what brand/model pumps they are but based on the specs he stated that they were capapable of pushing 4 feet of head and aproximately 10x my tank volume, that is the only item I'm not sure about. well see when I get the equipment as to whether I will keep them or get credit and ask for an alternate. On my own with my friends suggestion. i picked up the AI SOl super blue 3 mod package( will need more modules for my tank size I realize, but let me get my tank cycled first right LOL:spin1:, Reef Octo NWB-200 protein skimmer, 75 GPD RO/DI 5 Stage *PLUS* System with Auto Shut Off Kit from bulk reef supply, 26 Gallon Flat Bottom Tank from Plastic-mart.com for reservoir, Tunze osmolator for my ATO, And my friend is donating a pair of circulating pumps Vortech(I think) thats my start. I'm blessed that I can get all this from the get go, but I told my buddy that I want to do this right. And with a lot of Guidance from this forum I will say Howdy.

Sunand,

How blue are those lights? Are they completely blue in color or do they offer some white light? Or is it pretty much 20k (450nm) range stuff ?

Hello everyone, my name is Marshall. I have been lurking for a few months now and decided I would formally introduce myself. My family currently shares a current USA cardiff 25G reef tank. We have only 5 fish, a cleaning crew, a few corals, and 80lbs or so of live rock. I purchased a 125g aqueon that is not setup. I recently setup an RO/DI and mixing station. Slowly but surely...
