If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi All! I'm new to the hobby and in the process of setting up my first saltwater tank. I've had freshwater tanks off and on for years and currently have a 20G freshwater, 55G freshwater, and working on setting up a 55G fowlr to get into saltwater. I've got the tank, stand, dry base rock, sand, etc... I'm still waiting on some equipment to arrive, but hoping to be able to fill the tank and start cycling in the next week or so.

I've been lurking RC for a while and learned a ton. Thanks!

Hello all, another new guy here.

My name is Dave and I have had a reef tank for about 6 months now. I got a nice tank that was semi established from a good friend who was a great help to get up and running. It is a 65 gal tank and has a bit of live rock, sand, variety of fish and am just starting to add a little coral to the tank. A BIG thanks to this forum and everyone who helps and supports! Lots of great info here and I decided to register as Im sure I will keep coming back for info and ideas.

New to reefing

Hello,

My name is Justin, I'm a 37 yo software engineer, married with two children (4 and 12). I've had aquariums all of my life and at one point about 10 years ago I was a supplier to a lot of pet stores for fresh water fish. I've breed and raised anything from Discus to Tanganyikan Cichlid's and just about everything else inbetween.

How ever I've never had the pleasure of doing a salt reef. And I'm looking forward to the years to come.

I had someone give me an entire setup because they were tired of looking at an empty aquarium that an ex had left in her house.

Being the aqua-nut I am I couldn't say no ... my bank account how ever wishes I would have.

Looking forward to some great conversations and leaning on some real help here!

Hello everyone, new to the hobby. Been doing freshwater for 10 years and had cichlids in a 10 gallon tank which they outgrew and just been upgraded to a 40 breeder. Now I'm going to do a nano reef with the 10 gal to get my feet wet in the saltyness of the hobby. Glad to read everyone's advice on here!

Hello all, My name is Michael, I am from E. Quogue NY and I am taking the plunge into the unknown. I was always so intimidated by saltwater tanks, so I had smaller freshwater setups. I am now going to get myself a 140 gallon tank and stand and attempt to set up a live reef. I have been looking all over to learn what I can and even watched videos on Youtube. I am in no rush. I wont be ordering any kind of live sand or live rocks untill I feel comfortable to where I think I can keep them alive. So If any posts seem stupid, I am sorry in advance.
Mike

All of you all i hughly recommend looking at the 10 or so 'sticky' threads at the top of this section, those will DEFINITELY help you know what the steps should be.

Thanks for the welcome and this tip! I've been getting lost in the stickies, there is some really great information there!

First Post - Hi Guys - New Frag Tanks

Hi Guys, First Post here!

After having a local fish store here in Orlando, FL set up my Red Sea Max S650, I decided to set up a couple smaller tanks on my own for growing coral.

The tanks are still cycling and I can't wait to start adding coral. I'm thinking of getting some things from Jason Fox and Sexy Corals.

This weekend I set up the Radion lights, Vortech Pumps, and an Apex AquaController.

I am still learning a lot, but absolutely love this hobby!

Hello everyone! Ive been reefing 2-3 years. I didn't know anything until the past year. I learned alot from another forum that I love(dont know if Im allowed to say the name..). I try to soak up all the info I can, so here I am.

Hello. I've wanted to have a saltwater tank since the first time I watched Jaws. 35 years later, I'm finally able to begin my quest to owning a shark tank. Starting with the baby steps of course with a 55 gal. With six months experience, i am still trying to wrap my head around the science of this hobby. My wife lets me spend loads of mony on it and I'm quickly realizing that this is as addicting as any narcotic!

Hello everyone I'm in Arkansas. I've been reefing about 2 years and cichlids Since I was a baby. I have a 100g with a 30 sump I'm building now just sold my 75 bow

Hello everyone, new to the Salt water world, I have had fresh water for 20 plus years, Started in the salt water, a few months ago, I did a lot of reading and asking questions for a few friends that are into it. My tank is a 20g long set up three weeks ago, live sand, 18lbs of live rock, donated from a friend along with two damsels, a yellow tang. livestock where added after three weeks of water, rock and two hermit crabs with a few grass shrimp.

AquaClear 70
50w heater
Zoo Med Aqua Sun T5 holds two 24w bulbs

I have a Maxi Jet 600 I have not put in. I think it is way to big for this tank.

Any Suggestion I would appreciate the help.

Hello all! I'm new to salt but have been keeping fresh water tanks ranging from 2.5 gallons (heated, filtered betta tank) up to 55 gallons (tropical semi-aggressive community) and several sizes in between (more , shrimp, and live bearers).

I have decided to move to having on one tank, and that it will be my first salt water tank. It is a 53 gallon "hexagon". It is a hex in that it has 6 sides, but it is essentially a 55 gallon with diagonal front corners. It will have a 10 gallon DIY sump. I am still undecided on stocking, but know I want corals.

Hello, I'm am a new owner of a 56 gallon column tank. Very excited, can't wait to get my Fiji LR started. Trying to decide and plan out my fish though:
Cinnamon Clownfish or Saddleback
Purple Dottyback
Green mandarin
Domino Damsel or Yellowtail
Would love a yellow tang but everyone says my tank is too small

As far as my set up:
Fluval canister filter for 70 g
Corallife protein skimmer for 65
One 1600 gph oscillating water pump
Marineland reef led with timer

Would greatly appreciate your thoughts and tips

coming back

coming back

I'm just getting back into the hobby after a few years. I've always been a "low budget" reef keeper and this time I really want to do things "right!" I've just set up a new tank and I've killed two "cycle" damsels in a row! :( I blamed impatience on the first one so I was very carefull to aclimate the second one slowly but it died almost immediately too! :( All the water parameters are ok. I used Reef Crystals and RO water. And all the equipment is used and been sitting around while I've been on haitus - I intend to upgrade to state-of-the-art in phases. I'm stumped. Anyone had similar experience?

Buying a Second-Hand Tank

Buying a Second-Hand Tank

My name is Michelle. I am finally getting a reef tank after about 6+ years of dreaming. I never had the money to buy one new, but I was fortunate enough to find someone selling their currently running setup due to an upcoming move. Long story short, I am picking up my first 55g reef tank on Tuesday! So excited, but also very nervous about moving this tank. I hope all goes well. Here is what I know about the tank, roughly...

55g glass tank with built in overflow
Aquatic Life 6 bulb T5 lights
Two chamber sump with protein skimmer
40 lbs. live rock
Established 4+ years

The livestock consists of two clowns, a squirrelfish, a yellow tang, sally lightfoot crab and various snails. I know for sure I will not be keeping the yellow tang, since the tank is so small. I also don't think I will be keeping the crab and the squirrelfish. Any advice on livestock and/or about moving an established tank would be much appreciated!
