If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey RC! My name is Sam. I'm a full time college student majoring in marine biology! I plan on working with sharks. I've kept fresh, brackish, and saltwater tanks all my life but just this year I decided to make the jump to reef keeping. I have a JBJ 3 gallon picotope with 2 striped mushrooms, 1 metallic blue mushroom, a few ricordeas and a purple asterospicularia which are all doing very well. I've heard that its not a good idea to start with a pico but all is going well. Now that I have it all I want is a bigger tank! Definitely planning on upgrading soon! I'm very excited to join RC, there's just so much I have yet to learn!!!

Hello my name is Ben

i have been keeping freshwater for about the last 5 years and now want to try my hand at saltwater tank

i have a 10 gal. set up what can i do in a 10 gal tank im up for anything

Hey RC, I'm Dave. I've had several freshwater tanks for the past 4 years and have been getting into marine life and reef keeping. I have recently downsized all my tanks and am left with a 55gal mixed reef with 15 gal refugium and 15 gal section for skimmer/return pump. I'm currently working on a 12 gal JBJ Nano with a DIY LED light and a few other upgrades. Looking to turn it into an SPS and Invert tank. Always stumble on your site through google and it has been a good resource so I figured I would join.

Hey All,

I'm a long-time freshwater aquarist and am ready to try my hand at a reef tank. I've done small bits of research here and there for the last five years and feel I have a fairly decent understanding of building a reef tank, but as with anything, there is always more to learn. I have a bunch of freshwater tanks and lots of experience there. I recently picked up a 25 gallon tank that's 20" tall, 2 feet wide and a foot deep that I'm going to use for my first attempt. I'm a patient man, so this potential reef tank will not be set up until I'm sure that it will do well, or as sure as I can be. I've got most of the necessary equipment save for the protein skimmer and UV sterilizer. I'm sure there is more that I'll find out I need however. My reason for joining is that I'd like information/hints/opinions of a group of people that have a comprehensive knowledge of the subject. I'll save my queries for the setup thread. Thanks for reading.

Hello, from Lleida (Catalunya-Spain), my name is Albert.

Hello RC community

Hello RC community

Hello All :wavehand: I'm semi-new to the hobby as I have been keeping aquaria for 20+ years. Recently noticed my Grandson had in interest in fish when I'd take him to the LFS so I decided to get the old 240g out of mothballs. Began this adventure at the end of September and I am in the Cylcling Phase currently. Been reading a lot of post's here on RC and find the technology has changed dramatically since I quit 7 years ago (time constraints). I haven't completely decided what type of setup I will keep, Fish/Reef or FO, I have about 4 more weeks to decide. Hope to recieve lots of good help/ideas.

Welcome GranPa J...You will find many here willing to offer assistance on your road to addiction:)
Technology has changed but the basic principles are the same: Correct parameters and stability for whatever you plan to keep. Quarantine fish/corals to help prevent the introduction disease. Its a greater challenge to get rid of pests and disease in larger tanks. Focus on good filtration and flow, this way no matter which direction you go you won't need to back track. Lighting is a pickle because you can get FOWLR lighting then decide you want reef in which case you'd need to upgrade.
Whatever you decide...Enjoy it!

Thanks for the welcome. still trying to figure out the acronyms used these days. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since I began the craziness/addiction again. FOWLR Lighting is what I currently have, Amonia is 0 today, Nitrites 0.25, Nitrates 5.0, PH 8.1, all tests API, Salinity1.0237, Temp 79. cycling aprox 3000+ gph thru 2 dual Wet/Dry 40g sumps (80g total connected together), UV Sterilizer & Skimmer.

Hello All,
I am a relatively new reef keeper, and this is my first post. I have a 75Gal tank with 10Gal(looking to upgrade to 30gal) sump running for 8 months now. 50lbs fiji live rock, solar flare led lighting, vortech mp10 ecosmart powerhead, aquaclear powerhead, and mini-g skimmer. Alive: 2 ocellaris clowns, coral beauty, pajama cardinal, flasher wrasse, blue cleaner wrasse, juvie atlantic blue tang, marine beta, algae blennie, mandarin dragonette, hawkfish, several various hermits, snails, blue linkia starfish, sand sifting star, feather star, 2 emerald crabs(never see them), arrowhead crab, coral band shrimp, blood shrimp, sun cup coral, 2 trumpet frags, duncan frag, 3 gonipora(1 green 1 pink, 1 red), 2 torch coral, 1 leather, 1 brain(not doing well), 1 bubble, 1 yellow gorgonia, 3 feather duster worms, 1 orange fan sponge, 1 orange ball sponge, 1 lobo, 1 green brain, 1 frogspawn frag. I think that's it for now. Just putting it out there to see how i'm doing. Most corals "sleeping right now" so photos are not that good. Any suggestions, comments, questions, ideas and other totally welcome. Thanks!
OKay, can not submit photos at this time. will try again soon. Any tricks on how to upload photos? I keep receiving a "security token" error message.

Figured i'd get my first post out of the way here. I've been lurking and reading this forum for about 6 months but never thought to register, just build up my knowledge so I don't ask the same questions over and over.

I'm working on getting my 1st sw tank set up after having fw tanks for a while. I picked up a 125g tank that i looked the look of and decided to start there. The guy before me said there weren't any issues however, i'm a little OCD about my hobbies/projects and I've removed most of his work.

I've had to replace a bulkhead, added sections in the sump for a fuge, and redid his plumbing just in this first week. I haven't even thought about the lights yet. It's a little frustrating but i'm really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to learning new things here on rc.

Hi, I just joined a few days ago. Had a fowler 12 gal for 5 yrs and recently introduced some softies and lps. Not sure why i waited so long. I plan on upgrading to 28-34 gallon shortly. There are many nice setups by fellow members on this site. It really gives me great encouragement.

My name is Jason. I am from OKC, OK. I just started my reef tank 2 weeks ago and have been loving the hobby so far.

I purchased an 80 gal tank with overflow and have about 80lbs of live rock (man made), live sand, and two koralia power heads and 1 AI LED for now. Before I put in ay coral or fish I will purchase another.. So far I have a few snails, shrimp and lots of sponges.
