Hi everyone, just got my first saltwater tank for Christmas, a biocube 29. I have 28lbs of live rock and about a inch of live sand.

My name is Jose and I'm new to the hobby. I bought the tank for me and my family to enjoy and my daughter loves fish :bounce3:. I get the fun job of maintaining and making sure everything is up to par . I had a 10 gal nano about 5 years ago but when i went on a trip the person i left in charge to maintain my tank decided not to do so there for everything in my tank went belly up :sad2:. Now i am back into the hobby after many years of wanting to get back into it i finalely have the chance to do so. I have now a 90 gallon tank with a Ehiem canister filter a marine land 350 canister filter a sea life 75 wet and dry filter and a sea life 75 skimmer and a solarmax high output t5 lighting fixture. Hopefully now with this equipment and coaching from everyone on here :bounce2:. I can finally get thing right now . Happy New Years and I wish everyone a prospers new year :beer:

hi. my name is alexandra. i am extreemly new to saltwater. i've had my 3g for about a month now and finaly introduced a couple of corals and 2 small clowns 2 days ago. i'm setting up a 155g acrylic tomorrow. it will be a nice tank, but needs almost entirely new lighting. i live in sacramento with my husband and two young kids. i arranged rock in a 55g hex tank yesterday afternoon and am waiting for the water to clear up the rest of the way to see what it really looks like. i still need to figure out what i need to use to buff scratches out of acrylic, and whether or not i can do the outside of the tank when it's full!

As typical forum etiquette, the first post should be an introduction post.
I am Mutz pronounced like boots, not like nuts like my friends like to introduce me as.

I have had fresh water tanks before successfully. Years ago, I was given a saltwater tank, but my lack of knowledge and my impatience cause that to be a failure.

Now, I did some reading and learned a little and I just started up a saltwater tank again. This time I want to try and do it right and make it a reef tank.

I have been reading the forums but I am still getting lost by all the acronyms. But I will slowly catch on.

My salt water tank is now about 3 months old. It is 55 gallons with about 75lbs of liverock, and about 1.5 inches of livesand. I only have 2 percula clownfish, some cleaning critters, and I just got my first corals ever this past week. Yellow Polyps which also has some other type of coral growing on the same rock. I have a flowerpot and a hammer coral. The kids are pressuring me to get more fish but I am holding my ground for now. I plan to add a few more slowly but wanted to make sure stuff is compatible.

I look forward to reading more posts and learning a lot.

My name is Kenny as the screen name implies. I am from Jacksonville FL. The reef tank bug bit me about a year ago, so I hit up CL and came across a std 75 gal tank with stand, wet/dry filter and, a skimmer. I ran it for about 6 months as a FOWLR, but ended up moving. During the move I dropped the skimmer and broke it beyond repair. Well as luck would have it, a friend of mine that runs a booth at the local flea market had an Aquapod 24 that he said I could have. I took all the live rock and put it in the pod with 25lbs of new live sand along with the 2 damsels that were in the 75. Fast forward 6 months and we arrive at X-mas eve. My G/F says "what do you want most of all for X-mas?" I tell her "To be able to keep any thing I want in the pod." She gives me her credit card and tells me to go online and order what I need. SWEET!!! I went on Rapid LED's website and ordered the DIY 24 LED kit. I got the kit in the mail new years eve and had it assembled and installed by the end of the day. Since the lighting upgrade I have added a few LPS and soft corals. OK I guess that is enough for now.

hello everyone,

I have had my 55g fowlr for about 4yrs now with plenty of fish throughout these years. I somewhat inherited the tank from a friend's ex (they wanted nothing to do with the tank or my friend). The person told me the tank had everything and was cycled. I knew nothing about keeping a tank but had always wanted one so i tried to educate myself as best as a I could. The tank had 2 clown fish, blue tang, blenny, some hermit crabs. Not all of the fish survived the move, too stressful for them i guess. I was left with a clown fish, the tang and the blenny, they survived about a 1 1/2 yr then i moved. From then till now I have gone through many things with the tank :uhoh3: I have lost almost all my fish except for one. My brother-in-law became interested in SW tank recently and has been doing some extensive research which prompted me to come back to the forums and learn or re-learn some things. I currently have a lion fish (not sure which one russell or volitan, will post pics later on, so you guys can help) and 2 hermit crabs. I want to add one more mate but I want to do it right. The fish i have in mind is a foxface rabbit fish. :bum:

I am a Ag teacher at a small school which I have 2-500 gal tanks and raise over 400 lbs of talipia a year from those tanks to have a fish fry for the students.

hello everone im some what new to reefing and slatwater only been keeping a tank since aug of 2011 i have a 90 gal display with a 33 long sump/fuge lighting is a 4bulb power compact 94 w 2 10k and 2 antic and a t5 on the sump/fuge i have some lps and some softies and a chalice yes i know a mixed tank but what can i do its addictive reef keeping and 6 fish but other then that my name is don /pokeycow thank you all

Hey everyone! My name is Scott. The wife and I have decided to take the plunge into reef keeping after ~5 years of freshwater tanks. The allure of all the different critters and activity in a reef tank finally became too much to resist.

We're going to setup our 125g dual Durso with its 33g long DIY sump once I get a good feel for the equipment and critters we'd like to keep along with their associated pitfalls. We had originally planned on setting this tank up as an African Cichlid tank but plans got stalled a couple years ago and it's just been sitting. Incidentally, we now have several of the pieces in place for a decent reef setup.

Over the next several weeks I'll be doing lots of reading here trying to figure out whats what and narrowing down a stocking plan.

At one point, we had 12 tanks running ranging in size from 10g up to 150g. Eventually I got overwhelmed between time demands at work and the weekly 50% water changes require to keep up with heavily stocked Mbuna tanks. (Gotta keep those feisty fish happy). We are currently down to a planted 150g Dennison Barb tank and a 55g Mbuna tank.

I greatly look forward to the next several weeks and months!

Hi,

I wanted to take a second and introduce myself. My name is Brad and I live in Minnesota. My wife and I just finished building our house and the perfect thing to complete it was a nice aquarium. So we have begun the journey of slowly entering into this lifestyle that I hope to be doing still on the day that I die.

I've bought a 150g display tank (all glass) along with a 75g sump. I really enjoyed building the stand and assembling all of the pieces to make this a reality. I have a picture journal of the stand build and the tank build that I will share sometime. I can only hope my tank will be half as nice as the pictures I have seen on this site.

I hope to meet you around the "virtual fireplace".

new guy here - had salt water tanks 10 years ago then moved and sold it off - well time to start again - just got a 90 gal long tank building the stand and a storage unit next to it with a top to work on - havent fully decided on all the plumbing yet - thru the floor or under tank - we'll see

Hello RC. This Brian & Alicia and we live in FLA. we purchased a 29g Biocube Hqi. My first saltwater but used to have large freshwater tanks years ago with mostly oscars. Hi, my name is Mike, I'm 24 and I'm new to this hobby but I find it very interesting. I recently got a job at a pet supply company and they were throwing away a tank so I just decided to buy it, and there wasn't really anything wrong with it except the lights were broken, it has no cracks and is sealed properly...it's a 37 gallon aa aquarium..I've started on my aquarium already but I just need a little guidance..so I bought a 50 gallon bag of instant ocean sea salt mix, 40 lbs of base rock and 40 lbs of live sand from natures ocean and set it up in my tank..I just used regular tap water for the salt water..I kind of messed up cause I filled the tank with water first and then I put the live sand in so it clouded the tank for a few days but it cleared up..then I added the base rock..the tank has it's own filtration system..it has 4 compartments, bio-balls, 2 carbon ones and a ceramic stone one..I used a tap water conditioner for the tank..I have an API saltwater test kit and a hydrometer..all the parameters were right after the first month..the live sand said I could add fish right away but I wasn't sure so I let it run for 2 weeks and I used bio-spira to help..I have a 150 watt heater, 2 maxi-jet powerheads..a 400 and a 600..the aquarium came with a 2 t5 flouresent lighting system 13w each though..I have a wavemaker for the powerheads..but I still need to get a protein skimmer..I was wondering if I really need one and I'm wondering if i need to change the lighting..the tank was running for a month and so I put some fish in..I think I made another mistake cause I added 4 clownfish at the same time and i think the bio-load is too much?..they've been in there about three weeks now..and my parameters are
Salinity-1.026
Ph-8.0-8.5
Ammonia-I can't remember but it's not 0 but I used an ammonia detox and it says it will still show up but it's non lethal to fish anymore
Nitrite-.50ppm I think
Nitrate- is at 40ppm?! I've been using a nitrate reducer for a month now and I can't get it to go down to 0
Phosphate-0
Calcium-over 400 I use a calcium booster too
Kh-I think it's a little high =12-15dkh
I'm not sure what else..I'm not home atm..
I wanted to know how long it'll take for base rock to become live rock? I bought a 3 lb piece of live rock and scraped off the coralline to help it grow on the base rock..it's been almost 3 months and I don't even see any algae growth..the base rocks are starting to turn brown a little bit and there's these dark brown spots on the live and idk what it is..I heard it was some diatoms? I think and I read it'll go away by itself..i do a 25% water change every
2 weeks..can you let me know if I'm doing an okay job and what I need to do to help with my tank..thanks
