If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello, my name is Cory, i am 25 and from Maine. I've been interested in this hobby for over a year but lack of funds kinda killed that. as of a month ago i kinda fell into 180 gallon tank, with a protein skimmer, T5 Current lights, a pair of sea swirls, about 90lbs of rock at the moment plan and need to get more. have a few fish and some coral. there is a good possibility i am in over my head so this should be good. I've been doing some reading here and realize i need to do a lot more. i am hopeful that i can someday make my tank as beautiful as some of the ones i have seen here but i shale see all in good time. :D

Good luck, it is an addicting hobby, so beware! Unfortunately, there is a lot of trial and error as you ramp up; hopefully the blogs on this site help avoid some of the "error".

Hi. My name is George. I don't even own a tank yet but I'm looking to set up a reef and fish aquarium.

I've been an avid scuba diver for over 10 years and I've seen most of these fish in their natural environment but I've always wanted to have a saltwater aquarium in my home so others can see a little bit of what I see when I dive.

I'm hoping to do lots of research on this site and get lots of great advice.

Newbie....

Newbie....

I actaully atempted to have a saltwater aquarium several years ago. Doing al, the wrong things and failing miserably. This passion has returned and I have been doing some pretty extensive research to help educate myself.

I still have the same 55 gallon tank as before, however I feel I need to have an upgraded tank. I still want a 55 gallon because I already have a stand for the dimensions of the 55 gallon. My problem with the tank I have, is that I believe it is tempered, preventing me from drilling into it. I would like to have an internal overflow. I have looked into building my own acrylic tank, but I am having trouble finding a vender that will sell the acrylic needed at a decent price. Suggestions?

Greatful to now be a part of a community that will help educate and give advise/wisdom.

Thx,

Hello everyone, I'm PlaneReefer, my real name is Jon and I'm from Rhode Island. I recently got addicted to this hobby and am looking to start a small reef aquarium. I'm hoping I can gain some patience from this hobby;)

I have some experience in the freshwater side of things, but I found I got bored easily with FW. Marine aquaria appeals to me much more because of the colors and sea-life contained within.

I'm looking to start in something like the RSM 130D and eventually move to something larger once I have more experience and room.

Anyways, that's a little bit about me. I'm exciting to learn and have my own living reef in my living room.

Thanks for having me!

Hello

Hello

My name is Edward, I'm new to marine aquaria, I just acquired a 29 gal bio cube. Tank has been set of for two months, after looking at rock and water for a month, I added two Ocellaris clowns, some palythoas, a trumpet coral, one mushroom, and pulsating Xenia. (over time, not all at once).

??? It appeared as if my trumpets were not doing well at all, I noticed my water level was low so I added some RO water, it was COLD. This did two things, dropped my salinity back to normal, as well as lowered the temperature of the water to around 73 (from 77) and I fed them some brine shrimp instead of mysis shrimp, and I about an hour they bounced back.
Can someone tell me what happened?

Good morning (well it is morning here). My name is Kevin and I live in Columbia, MO. First I'd like to congratulate everyone on here for such a great site. I have kept tropical fish for several years and currently have a 29g planted tank that I love. I have wanted to get into the saltwater hobby for years and have been lurking on this site for several months trying to gather info.

As I am still in a somewhat transitional period in my life (residency), I am thinking a nano is the way to go right now (plus the wife is still a little skeptical about all this). I must admit that after all of the reading I have done I am somewhat intimidated to actually take the plunge. Right now I am looking at either a biocube or the innovative marine 16 (my wife actually likes the aesthetics of this tank the best). Also have considered drilling a 20L and building a DIY sump with a 2nd 20L.

Would like to have a clown, a cardinal fish and I'm really interested in a goby. My wife really likes many of the shrimp at the LFS. Am also planning on starting with some of the more easily kept corals to get my feet wet. Will be sure to ask quesitons as they arise.

My names N006R33F3R and I live in Rhinelander WI. I just started cycling a 125 gallon salt tank hoping to start slow. Been lurking a couple months reading reading reading... Would like to have a couple gobies and a cuc by new years... I plan on making it into a mixed tank. Thanks...

New to the forum and today's methods

Hello all, thought I would introduce myself. A while back ( about 7 years ago ) I broke down my 90 gallon reef because I was moving quite a bit and got tired of moving my tank around town. I had it setup for about 10 years prior. I used a wet/dry setup with bio balls and a hang on skimmer back then. Everything ran pretty well for the most part. A few unwanted algae blooms and struggled a bit with some corals. But all in all I was happy with the setup at that time however I would have done a few things differently if I had known what I realized later on in the hobby.

I decided to set it back up a couple weeks ago and have been researching ever since. I was pretty amazed how this hobby has flourished over the years and realized I had a lot to learn. I've been ordering and prepping over the past few weeks. Waiting for deliveries is torture by the way. Everything is sitting in the living room just screaming " set me up " but it's a good thing because im doing a ton of research in the meantime.

This time around I'm ditching the wet/dry and using a 20 gallon long 3 chamber sump. I ordered a super reef octo 2000 skimmer, mag drive 700, ro unit, and a bunch of other peripherals.

I already have a 48" coralife MH fixture and ordered some new 14k bulbs for that. The tank has a built in overflow and my friend from work is selling me a mp40. I also have the luxury this time around of having access to my shop at work and all kinds of supplies. I cut a piece of 1/4 black plexi to place on the back of the aquarium on the outside to black out the backside and can easily remove if I don't like the look after everything is setup. It's nice to have access to materials and tools this time around.

Anyway, gotta run but I look forward to reading and posting on reef central and becoming a part of the community here and I am especially looking forward to getting this tank back up and running!

Thanks for the read
