If you owned Orphek...

...what would you do to improve their fixture?

I have read some recent threads (and articles) that have been critical of the Orphek 156. And yet, there are some aspects of the company that I like - despite some missteps in the market. So, in the spirit of constructive feedback, what would you like to see changed for the next version of this product?

If you owned the company you would be speaking Chinese!

There are 3 major issues that need correcting IMO.
1. Stop the lying. Sell the fixture for what it is. Full disclosure.
2. Stop stating the optics are wider than they are. Orphek lies in stating that 40 degree optics in their fixture are 90 degree optics and 60 degree optics in their fixture are 120 degree optics. It is a blatant lie.
3. Sell the fixture for fair market price. This fixture used to be sold for $500 direct from China 2 years ago. There have been no changes to the fixture (except changing out a couple LEDs for violet ones. The retail price has swelled to $899 because they have been able to convince the public that they have done something to make it worth that. Using 2 year old tech this fixture should be priced no higher than $450 although I feel $400 is a more fair price.

Greg do you have a link to info about when it was sold direct from China? I'm a little murky on my Orphek history, but I thought the story was an engineer from Israel developed the light and they produced it in Brazil(?) (at least initially?).

That is where Greg's first point comes into play. Stop the lying.

I own 3 fixtures from them. I'm very happy with the color and the shimming. One important point is that you do not see the color separation (blue, white, yellow-white) that you can see with Cree LED fixtures.

I would like from them to be able to control more than 1 LED fixture from a single power supply. Because 1 power supply by fixture is quite bulky and it takes a lot of room. Also, one very important thing is: I would like to control these power supply from my APEX controller since my controller control everything in my system. It's cumbersome to set 6 timers (1 timer for white LED and 1 timer for Blue LED) to control 3 LED fixtures.

My setup is new, so I cannot comment on coral grow!!!

I would like integration with my RKE for dimming and built in drivers eliminating the power supply box.

don't know, but there always seems to be controversies around Orphek. just come out and clear things up.

anyone open a fixture to see what's inside? and the optics thing bothers me. and the price.

Exactly. This thread reaks of baiting by an Orphek associate.

Trust me, I'm no Orphek associate, if that's what you mean. I can honestly say I have no professional relationship with the lighting or reef aquarium industries whatsoever.

So if the whole Israel/Brazil thing is incorrect, what IS the story? I feel like there's a big secret somewhere and I'm the only one not in the "know". Is there another article or link somewhere I missed?

thanks g,

looks like an egg.:)

please explain what i'm looking at? doesn't look good.
You are looking at a macro of the actual Orphek diodes in a PR-156 that I took some months ago.

Think something similar to this without the star.

I don't understand all the bashing around this company?!?!

When someone buys an iPhone or a Sony LED, do the company specify in detail all parts inside their product??? Apple gives no information about what is inside. Probably their iPhone cost less than 100$ to manufacturer (once your iPhone battery is dead, it cost only 89$ to get a brand new). But Apple sells their iPhone for 800$. So, is it over price? Yes, but people wants them. So they buy it.

Is the Orphek fixture over price? Yes, but i cannot complaint about the quality of fixture. Once again, I will tell in 6 months if My SPS is growing well !!! But they are not perfect and their product can be improved but so far i am happy with it. There is no dimming like the MH but people are very happy with MH. So dimming is just a gizmo but it is useless. Coral does not care about dimmimg.

I also do not have any relationship or any $$$ to write this email. But i am tired to read that people does not like them because they dont tell with LED they are using or where the company is from! Personally I dont care if they have a good poduct and they honor their warranty if something happens with the my fixture.

Best Regards and peace!
They are actually too war in the world!!!

What if a company went around bashing other companies' products while lying about the other companies' products and their own? Would you feel differently if people had something to say about it?
