If you were an 8"+ Regal Angelfish...

What would you eat?

Typical Regal angel and I'm running out of Ideas.

She wont even look at a clam on the 1/2 shell.

Mine would not touch prepaired foods at first. I had a rock of green zoa's that he mowed over, and then he worked on some browns. Luckaly when they ran out he decided to eat pellets and then nori and then flake foods. It was a good 6+ weeks before i could get him on them though.
Maybe a nice hunk of sponge to chew on?

Like Cretin I had to feed my Regal zoa's as well for the first two months before I for any real response to prepared food...

When I picked up the regal for the school tank I found that snowing the tank out with Cyclopeeze and then adding mysis and other foods. The Cyclopeeze seems to get them pretty excited.

Give it a try and let us know...

If it's not skinny then don't sweat yet. That's a pretty big fish so it'll take some time to train it to eat prepared food. It took mine 3.5 weeks to even nip and spit frozen but few days later it started to take NLS pellet.

Mine didn't start eating till it was in the middle of the second round of Prazi. Once it started to nip and spit it didn't take long to starting taking in small pieces of mysis.

btw--I don't see one that big around so just curious if this was the mis-bar yellow belly from NYAquatic?

Flame,

Yes it is. ;)
I owe albano with the heads up on her.

Im not sweating too hard yet, I have had her for less then a week. She looks healty and shes a big fish.
I had a regal 1/2 her size go near 2 months without eating prepared foods.

This girl pays attention to nothing tho, not even what little zoos I have. I will try to grab a full rock when I get the chance.

I have not tried live adult brine yet, The only place I know to get it is almost 2 hours away and Just havnt had the chance to get up there.

This fish is to big I believe for live baby brine or cyclop-eeze. I would love to find a big hunk of sponge around.

Cyclopeese will do nothing for the fish besides hopefully stimulate it's appetite and get it to eat some of the meaty food you introduce with the cyclopeeze =)

I've found this works with all my angels to get them eating...

Did you dip her for flukes? Angels are notorious for having flukes and those that do seem to be less prone to eat.

I just go down the list of food and try everything, including pellets and flakes. I have a large male potters who only ate cyclopezee flakes for the first 6 weeks. Idol that only ate Jumbo mysis for the first two months. A C. vanderloosi cf. that only ate frozen brine for first 3 months. My chrysurus after 2 years decided to ONLY eat large spectrum pellets for 2 months after eating everything under the sun before. Fish and their eating habits/tastes always surprise me.

I did a PraziPro dip in a bucket but from what I am reading right now, That doesnt work. I have not seen any signs of flukes, no head shaking, twitching, scratching or cloudy eyes but I know that doesnt mean a lot either... So I may be treating the tank soon.

It just amazes me that she doesnt pay any attention to food at all. Prepared foods or rock nipping. She spends the entire day swimming about tho as any normal fish. I was up at 4am this morning and she was cruzing around under the moonlight.

One thing I have noticed is she doesnt shut her mouth 100%. Its not open far just not shut all the way. Tho the mouth looks very normal otherwise.

Its worth treating her for flukes and parasites, both internal and external. Adult angels in particular usually carry everything under the sun. Getting her alone in a calm tank may also get her trying a few things out food wise.

Mine was like that also with no appearant injury. It didn't start eating till the middle of the second round of Prazi.

From the picture on NYAq site that was a very fat and nice looking Regal and their picture usually isn't that good. I was looking at it almost everyday for 2 weeks but just couldn't pull the trigger due to it's size and no 14 days live guarantee. I think when it disappeared from the site they started the new policy with 14 days live guarantee.

Good luck!

What about placing other fish that are easier to train to eat with the angel? I had good luck with adding a few chromis in a QT system; seems that fish learn from one another about eating prepared foods. IME the feeding response is easier to trigger if other fish are eating as well.

Treg,

Any update on the Regal? I hope she's doing well.

I have to place the food in a mesh bag on a veggie clip for mine to eat. If the food is moving in the current she wont go for it but if it is stationary shell tear it up.

flameangel88,

She died a couple weeks ago.
Never ate a bite of food. I tried everything, live foods, clams, mussels, sponge, even bought her some meaty corals. Thought that would be win win if she ate thee coral or not, didnt factor in my lemon peel hybrid... She enjoyed them!!

I'm pretty sure I'm done with Regals now. I had bought 2 babies with her too. One made it a week and one almost two.

Frustrating hobby sometimes.

Treg,

Very sorry to hear that. This is certainly one of the few angels I consider difficult getting a healthy specimen. I've gone through 5 others (not a proud track record) ranging from 3 days to a month before the current Regal (last week was 100 days).

My suggesting is getting a small one (3" or less) and one that's eating before taking it home.
