I'm begggging all of you!!!

Slave to the reef!
Pleeeease!?!? Try and use the GIRS discussion boards on our own web page. We have been working countless hours on getting it going for you guys and it upsets me seeing people posting things here that could very good topics for our own forums. You guys pay $20 a year to be in the club, why use this free service when the one you pay for is just sitting there.

Just at least give it a try for a week, when you think of something you would like to post, just post it on the greateriowareefsociety.org instead. I know RC is a great place but now we have our own board I don't see why we can't use it.

Do we need a contest to get you guys to use it??? How about this.
First person to get 100 USEFULL posts will get 5 free frags from out of my tank. All you need to do is pay shipping or come and get them.

Yay.

Is there some sort of grace period or something?

Well, like anything new, it'll take time to get used to. Humans do not like change, even if it's a good change. People are used to going to RC and it will take time to switch over. It would almost be better if people were just redirected to the GIRS site upon logging onto RC, that way there wouldn't be a choice :)

I don't see the point in using a special forum when we already have this one. Splitting the traffic between 2 forums doesn't make any sense to me. If there were some huge difference between the 2 forums, I could see making a case for using one or the other. As it currently stands, what is the point of having a separate forum?

When I started out in the hobby it took me a long time to stumble across this forum. The last thing I want to do is make it harder for new local reefers to get in touch with our club. Local hobbyist are more likely to end up on this forum than on our special club forum. For now, I am staying here.

I fear the day when local reefers come to this forum and only see a handful of new posts and assume that there is no active club in the area.

Brad, we are working on getting a sticky to re-direct the traffic from here to our forums on our own web page.

What about when they come to our own web page and see only a handful of posts, to me that seems worse.....

BTW:check the bod email

I agree. No need for two forums.

What is the point?

Brad

This is almost exactily how I feel too.

RC provides us with members there traffic is more important to the club than random new members searching google. RC is the only reason I know GIRS exists.

The best thing about them is its free and someone else is doing all the work. If JB or any of the other people doing most of the work ever gets out of the club then it is bye bye forum.

I am a post whore either way when my internet is working but I am not turning my back on RC anytime soon.

Why is the members area restricted? I think if you opened it up to the public you would get a lot more traffic.

It seems like people who are interested in joining the club might like to see what is going on with the club prior to joining. It also makes the club seem kind of snooty. IMO

So why even bother having a club? why don't we just all join reef central and not even bother. I don't get it you guys are in teh club why not support your OWN website? What if reef central goes under? OR decides it doesn't want to be a free service anymore then what do you have? I'm pretty sure it will never happen but it could right? You guy's have good points but i just don't understand why you aren't more supportive of your OWN webpage and it's discussion forums. I'm not saying you have to do anything you don;t want, but as a member of Reef Central and a BOD member of GIRS I feel it is my duty to support GIRS first over reef central. There will always be ppl posting here but you can't honestly tell me that you don't want our own discussion forums to succeed can you?

We will be working on getting a sticky up to re-direct people to our HOMEPAGE and its discussion forums soon.

To answer your question brtfreud the members only forum is just what it says, members only, there are plenty of public forums on our page so ppl can get a feel for the club and its activities. The members only forum is just a tool so actual members can talk freely without being in the public eye, for instance club business and plans that may not be of interest to non-members.

We really need your support here people, I am not saying never post here again, but please keep in mind we do have our own forums and it would be nice to so them remain active.

Valid points.

I also agree with Brad. I know you guys worked hard and I don't want you to feel like it's not appreciated. Most reef related discussions should remain on RC in my opinion. If there are special deals or sales for GIRS members only, or discussions that will just get closed here on RC, take them to the GIRS boards. Go ahead and post a subject and link here on RC so we know something is going on. We need to look for ways to compliment RC, not replace it.

:D

Just swing the $20 over and your in....LOL
BTW:i have been to your house like 3 times now, you live like 8 blocks away....and still haven't been over. Do i smell bad or something? Maybe you heard the stories about my house? I can assure you all the ghosts are gone.....

I understand where you are coming from Waverz. but why not just post a link from the home page of GIRS to this Forum. If BOD stuff or other Club stuff needs to be discussed in private then we can use the GIRS Members only forum. Just cause someone prefers to use this forum rather than GIRS forum doesn't mean we "don't want a club" Why make it more difficult than what it needs to be?

This is simply not true. Anyone who had the slightest interest could learn to manage and update the GIRS website. You don't need to be an HTML guru or web programmer to do it. We're using FREE portal software, so if we have a website at all (which it's hard to argue that we don't need) it doesn't cost us anymore to have the extras.

I don't think anyone wants to abandon Reef Central, It's a valuable tool, and it helps people find our group, but that should not be a reason to totally abandon our website.

The problem as I see it is that the way we use Reef Central ultimately makes our group a slave to Reef Central and that's not a good thing. We always have to play by their rules even if it's not right for the club.

If we keep using RC, the way we have up until now, we might as well just abandon our website all together, because nobody is ever going to use it. If that ever did happen, 6 month the same people that our now coming out of the woodwork to protest the fact that we are trying to get people to use our website more, would probably be protesting the fact that we didn't have a website.

Personally, I think a lot of people are just lazy and not willing to give the new site a chance, but I could be wrong. I see a lot of people coming out of the woodwork to protest that I haven't seen post ever (or in quite a while). My guess is that some of them haven't even given out new site a look (though I may be wrong).
