Diatom filter are capable of removing the free swimming phases but usually do not have the required turnover to remove enough to make a dent.
You need a throughput of at least 7 times the tank volume per hour to have a notable effect.
All the diatom filter for fish tanks I've seen so far would only be good for nano tanks or QTs up to maybe 20 gallon.
Also, they require even more maintenance that UV sterilizers since they clog quickly.
