In desperate need of help!!! Video inside!!

Ok so i have been in the hobby for a little while but this in my first tank and sump setup. My problem is the drain to the sump is crazy loud. I added a straw, i raised the drain out of the water, and have stuck it under the water and under water is the quietest its been. Take a look at the video and please help me out. You may have to turn up the speakers sorry cellphone video.

Thank You desperate
Ryan

thanks for all the help

i would shorten the drain pipe and make it come out of water and also make it straight (no elbow on the end) also in ur overflow box there is an elbow facing down in the water to suck/siphon put a hole through it with a drill just above the angle.

i will give the drill a whole in the angle portion. so your saying in the picture above the part that is resting on the table or what ever is the intake for the drain and to drill in the straight portion correct.

what does the hole do??

also if the water is just dumping into the sup w/ a straight pipe wont it be louder?

What's noisy,the water splashing into the sump/ref?

the gurgling, like air pockets coming down the drain. did you watch the video? its a lot louder in person we have to crank the tv volume up. some of you have tank that you can barley hear running how it that done??

you can hear it at 9sec and 16sec i had just started the pump up the longer it runs the louder it gets

Don't drill the elbow.
You need what theyt call a reverse durso in you sump/ref.
This will seperate the air from the water coming down your drain pipe. And will help disperse the water into the sump without a lot of noise.

Here's a picture.
I think you'll get the idea from this. You can also use large diameter PVC.
Or make the verticle piece taller. It takes a little experiment.

Basically, you need a T that allows the air to surface out of the overflow water without bubbling. It helps to slow the water down with a short horizontal run. Then drill a hole in the cap the same as with you regular durso.
If you get water running out the hole you might need to make the vertical tube taller.
Good luck,hope this helps.

ok but i have this set up in in tank overflow
<a href="http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e64/Brewski4u1/?action=view&current=images-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e64/Brewski4u1/images-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and then i need to do this in the sump something just isn't adding up

Judging from what I see it a home made Durso.
Looks to be working quite well. It's just the bubble issue in the sump.
Pretty easy fis with a r. durso.I have a very large one on my basement sump.
I used like 3 inch diam pipe for it.

Here's another pic of a contraption I made up, following the reverse Durso principle. The drain coming from my remote refugium had a lot of bubbles going into the sump. This helped separate the bubbles out, and also made it quiet. The drain goes sideways into a large "T" (3 inch I think), then drains out though a smaller elbow. The water slows and the bubbles pop in the large T. Here's a pic, view taken from the top down:

In your second pic above, you can make the last vertical pipe much bigger, and remove that cap on top. The large vertical pipe will slow the water down, allow the buubles to pop and escape up the vent, and the water to go out from the bottom end. Does that make sense now? HTH!

What's to add up?

The durso slows the water down exiting via the overflow tube by restricting air into it.This in turn causes it to be more silent up top.
The water and air still has to exit below.
You can do what you want, but that's the way it's been done for years.

Stingythings45 is right, the noise you are hearing is the air thats trapped with the water coming down the pipe and being released at the same time as the water. Adding the reverse dorso should help since it will give the air a chance to get out before the water hits the sump. Its really easy to make. give it a shot.
If it doesnt resolve the issue, then set up a herbie method drain (if your overflow allows it). This is how I have my set up and its pitch quiet.
