Informal Poll - Vlamingi Tang

Grizzled & Cynical
I wonder if folks who have actually kept this fish could say what size tank it was in, how large it grew and over what period of time? Thanks in advance.

I had one I bought at 2", put it in my old 560. He was in there for maybe 6 months and grew to be about 4.5". Then I built an 800g and he was in there about 8 months and got to be about 7". Then one day I found him wedged into a rock dead in the early morning. Not sure what happened, maybe spooked in the middle of the night into a crevice.
He was pretty cool. But grew so fast. I won't own one again despite having a 860g 12' long tank currently

A lot of large tang often found dead without known cause, especially Naso tangs. I wonder if it is their size and open water habit cause the to be stressed living in the confined of our tank, even larger private tanks. I have read quite a few thread of sudden death Naso tangs.

Had a desjardini sailfin go belly up for no reason, but that's about it. I can never seem to get the Naso to the point where they are established in my tank for them to then die suddenly.

I had one in my 1500 gallon pool for about 6 months, during which time he grew from 2" to about 8". Contradictory to almost everything I had read about this species, he was extremely belligerent toward my other fish. The aggression started at about 5" and progressively got worse with size. Granted, I was keeping him with several tangs that were of similar shape/coloration (N. unicorns(2), A. mata(2), and A. blochii). The aggression however was spread to all of the fish regardless of species/size, and it got to the point where I was unable to add any new fish (Additional tangs, angels, wrasse... etc...) without them being relentlessly pursued until they were forced to hide behind the pump housing. I ultimately had to re-home him. I likely got the exception here in terms of temperament, but thought it worth sharing.

That's pretty interesting, every one I've ever seen was incredibly docile.
