installing a bulkhead

I've got a pretty standard 1" bulkhead.

Does it matter which end I put inside the tank and which end I put outside? Kind of a stupid question, I know. I assume it doesn't matter as long as the gasket/seal is in the right place, but every time I think I know what I'm doing I find out I really have no idea.

So here I am, asking you. Does it matter?

i dont think it really matters as long as the gasket is in the tank where the water is. the way i have always put them in is with the neck down outside the tank so it is more aesthetically pleasing if you see it as well as if its in an overflow its not easy to tighten down with the nut in the overflow.

It's going in my sump, so aesthetics don't matter, just functionality.

yea so just what ever is easyer to tighten than.

I have also used them both ways. Just make sure the gasket is on the inside of the sump.
