Intro & Our little (soon to be) reef

Live rock is growing coraline algae already...that was fast! A couple of little sponges 'appeared' along with a few foraminiferans, featherdusters, Spaghetti worms, Stomellatas and Collonistas, and what looks to be a baby starfish! Not bad for $3/#!!!

Here's a better pic of my 75g planted. It just had it's one month birthday and is starting to fill in a bit...about 1/2 way there:

Very nice.

I still have a bunch of small brittle starfish all over my nano. I really like those guys. No idea where they originally came from. You never know what you'll get on the rock. In my tank at work, I got a bunch of really small snails (about 3 different varieties) in on the rock.

What department are you in?

My EvilMels are tiny, but recovering.
HAH! Can't keep a good coral down! YES!

PhD. program in Philosophy. Main areas of research: Ethical Theory, Applied Ethics (Environmental Ethics and Biomedical Ethics), and History of Modern Philosophy (18th Century British mostly).

NH3, NO2 and NO3 test zero, but a wee bit of phosphates (0.25ppm). I never saw an ammonia or nitrite spike (didn't test the first week), but all the live rock was from established tanks. I even ground up a few dead freshwater shrimp and a few amphipods to be sure, but no spikes - I guess the bacteria are all fine for the minimal load. Nitrates were at about 10ppm before I added chaeto, they are now undetectable a week later. Lots of little critters, but I haven't seen any copepods yet.

Hitch-hiker coral!?! One of the pieces of live rock ended up being a straight up LPS (I think?) coral in half-decent shape - (orange polyps with florescent green eyes) not bad for $2.99/#!!! I have no idea what it is and I don't really want it, but don't have the heart to just kill it. I'll give it to somebody or trade it for a live rock...

Very nice setup you have going.

As for the LPS coral, if nobody wants to trade you for it, I can baby-sit it a while for you until the cycle finishes. I have some open space up near my lights in my 24G nano cube.

One of these days I am going to have to get rid of my cover and put a little 70W MH bulb overhead like you did. Too bad I traded mine away with that 12G nano I briefly had.

Thanks - it's not size that matters, it's technique and style!

If nobody wants to trade, I'll just give it you. Real-estate is at a premium in this tank and we already have a pretty good idea of the species we want to keep; this guy is not among them.

Looks like a Favia to me... :)

What is McLovin planning on keeping for a livestock list???

Well that's better than hot beer and cheap chicks....I guess:p

LMFAO!!!! :lol2:

Hehe, nice one.

On a more serious note, we haven't decided, if by livestock you meant fish. We've got plenty of time to figure that out.

We wanted a firefish, but have read they are great carpet surfers. We can't decide if Clowns are classic or cliche (probably both). We might just go with a small school of some of the really small gobies and call it a day - I'm more interested in the coral side of things anyways, like I am plants in FW.

Well, what kinds of corals??? Thats what I'm more interested in too... I wouldn't even have fish in the tanks if my wife didn't care... All they do is pollute your water... ;)

Coming from planted tanks and a background in landscape photography, I'm looking to aquascape with corals - I'm not a fan of the "fruit stand" look that most reef tanks seems to have, especially SPS dominated tanks (not trying to start a flame here, just stating a personal opinion).

It just so happens that my wife and I like easier to keep and cheaper corals; lucky us. And yes Randy, she is in charge of fish.

The idea is something like large areas of Zooanthus sp. and Palythoa sp. over most of the tank (more area of less vars.), GSP kept to a single rock towards the top, maybe xenia on the top rock, orange and green Ricordea florida and perhaps some other (non-brown) mushrooms along the sides towards the back where the light and flow is lower. Maybe some Frogspawn down low on an isolated rock if we're feeling lucky - chicka chicka yeah!

Stealin' my kickin' jokes right out from under me.

Chicka chicka, yeah.

See Chase...we'd crack you up more in person if you'd ever come back here.

Chicka chicka...yeeeeah.
